Come on out for weekend in beautiful Death Valley. Base Camp will be at Stovepipe Wells again this year. Get your room booked asap if you plan on staying in a room. There is also Camping and RV spots right across the road. Here is the link to book rooms and checkout the RV area. http://www.escapetodeathvalley.com/

Also, some of us are leaving on Friday morning and are going to meet in Olancha, off of the 395, south of Lone Pine. We will then head up to a return trip to the Reward mine. This is really cool, you can actually drive into this mine for about a 1/4 mile. After that for those who want to we will stop at Manzanar. This was a Japanese Internment camp in WWII. Lots of history and very cool to see. After that we can have lunch in Lone Pine and then head into Death Valley to Stovepipe Wells. We should get there around 4-5pm.

Hope to see everyone out there. I will post up the areas we will be visiting on Saturday soon.

thanks

Is it just me or have the room prices become $$$$?

I'm taking a few days off so I think I will be there Thursday day/evening through Monday morning. I might just wander around and should anyone else arrive early your welcome to join in. With the room prices it sounds like I'll be tent camping it by myself, I'd rather spend that money on fuel exploring :) .

I think what they call the Patio rooms are around $100, that's the cheapest. We will be there Friday afternoon/evening. A few of us are going up to the Reward Mine before heading into Stovepipe Wells. I have been scouring the internet and just about everything I have been looking into is closed. The only places I have been finding that are open are in the Furnace Creek Area. Dantes Lookout/Devils Golf Course/ Zabriskie Point. Those are not really 4 x 4 trails, just locations to see. If you have any ideas or know some places that are open please let us know.

thanks

Some of those closed roads may be passable with a bit of road work (having a decent shovel could prove handy), the few exceptions will be areas with a locked gate but those are typically off paved roads. I see no mention of stuff south of the Ashford Mill ruins on Badwater Rd (likely they are working on the paved section rather than the dirt part) the dirt portion through Ibex Dunes or Saratoga Spring. I also didn't see any mention in the north past Scotty's Castle west to Ubehebe Crater down to the RaceTrack Playa, Lippencott Mine Road, etc...

This is today's report. http://www.nps.gov/deva/loader.cfm?csMo ... eid=439529

For those of you that are going to Death Valley and are leaving on Friday. A few of us are going to go up to the Reward Mine and spend a little time there. We will then head back and go to Manzanar for a bit. We will then head into Lone Pine for lunch and re-fuel then head out to Stovepipe Wells. We should get to the lodge around 5 or so. If you are interested in doing this please meet in Olancha at the Mobil Gas station. Not hard to miss there is only one gas station there, please be there by 930 am and we will leave at 10am sharp.

For Saturdays run, I don't have anything solid picked out yet due to all of the closures. I am looking daily for roads that are open near Stovepipe. Titus Canyon is open, I know we did that last year but maybe we can do it again along with Rhyolite? Other things are Zabriskie Point, Devils Golf Course and Dantes Lookout. What ever we do it will be a fun weekend. Everyone, please make sure you check the route your driving in on, there are lots of road closures. Hope to see you all out there!

Others possible, Ubhebe Crater (possible snow), Racetrack Playa (reports say its wet so no walking on it), Lippencott Mine, further out Eureka Dunes, or out west possibly Darwin Falls and China Garden Spring. If you into hiking close to camp Mosaic Canyon with its marble like walls is cool. Further south near Furance Creek would be Echo Canyon which can be taken into Nevada or there are some mining areas around there. Of the main roads Artists Drive or Twenty Mule Team Canyon are nice. Looks like theres a Hole in the Wall drive too I can't recall being on.

Echo Canyon is a very good possibility. And other trails in that area.

Echo Canyon is nice theres Eye of the Needle (rock arch/porthole) http://www.panoramio.com/photo/5253088 , Inyo Mine area http://silverstateghosttowns.com/inyomine-ca.html, a dry waterfall and tight area in the canyon, various ruins/mines, over toward the state line is Lee's Camp ruins. In Nevada there is a mining area and Big Dunes from there you can head over to the 95 and either have dinner in Beatty or head back to camp.

Looks like it will be sunny mid to high 60's during the day and mid to low 40's at night. Lovely weather and I'm looking forward to getting away. :D

Yeah a little chilly but will be great. No rain or snow in the forecast. OK so for Saturday we will run Echo Canyon and hit the spots that Mike (MJR) posted above. Lets plan on leaving at 930 Saturday morning from Stovepipe Wells. Make sure you have plenty of gas, food and water for a day out on the trail, and make sure to dress in layers, it will be a little cold in the morning and when the sun goes down. Can't wait to get out there with everyone!
