fuel filter upgrade possible?

Hi,

just thinking of my fuel filter change at 100k miles and so on this way i´ve found many information on "upgrades" for the fuel filter. By example the change the OEM against a CAT fuel filter, or otherwise the change of an OEM against the Racor head...

So now i´m a little bit confused about this, because in my KJ there is this filter head assembled:

But there is an other filter head also possible for the KJ, i think 2005+ models??

Whatever, back to my filter head -> is there a "upgrade" with a CAT fuel filter possible? i´ve also two connectors on the under side of the filter in this clear plastic housing -> what are they for?

Or any ideas? I think its not necessary to put a bigger fuel filter in, but i like such "upgrades".. :BANANA:

You have a Racor Fuel filter head...it is upgraded. Just get a genuine 3micron racor filter and you'll be just fine. I'd install a lift pump if you haven't already.

Yes our early Export KJs came out with a Racor installed as standard....the USA owners are green with envy :wink:

I think the Racors that the USA owners are fitting look a bit different to our "Racors" though.

Why Chrysler had to save a few pennies and not fit the Racor as standard on the USA models boggles my mind :shock:

The "2.5_2.8 Export Diesel" supplement that I pointed out previously has the instructions on how to bleed this Racor filter and replace it....I have bought my new OEM filter and intend trying out the procedure myself sometime.

For this racor head unit, there is no possibility for a bigger fuel filter upgrade?

The second gen filter housing works great! Has a fuel heater. Using standard filter is fine. There is no need for a lift pump.

The racor one in the export models does the job fine, why would you want to fix something that isn't broken?

No, i don´t want to install a lift pump, i want just a bigger/longer fuel filter...

I want just to know if it is possible to add at the same filter head an bigger fuel filter, thats my question. The diameter has to be the same, but is there anywhere a longer fuel filter available?

What benefit fitting a longer filter? Apart from possibly long swap intervals

I expect nothing special from this, not even a longer swap interval. But it would look nice if anyone look in my engine bay and there is for example a CAT filter in... :mrgreen:

I think, i´ll buy the original filter and go with it to a specialized dealer to match some filters. :wink:

I've found these folk excellent to deal with and pricing was good even for export for the Racor kit. I could do better this way than local supply in my country & they didn't tell me I was crazy. Really good service.
You could try maesco.com in Maine(Mid Atlantic Engine Supply Corp) (got their address and phone if you require - a call gets you better freight (USPS). Talk to Chris Wells there for anything you need to do with this and MarineNutz.com or dieselfilters.com Phone for them can be supplied if needed also.
Marine nutz are in ? need my L'il black book and diesel filters are in Wisconsin.
Suggest the 245 size filter at 2 micron and add a clear bowl to it of you don't already have it.
Also the heater (but you would already have one - yes? Racor heater is apparently compatible between the Racor/Mopar circuitry but you need to do some soldering to piggy-back it.
The heater puck can be fitted into the clear bowl at the bottom.

Glad you have all the necessary bits.
In case it helps I just measured the height of the metal part of the filter element - the 245 element is 140 mm long. With those closed canister filters like the Cat and the Mopar it's hard to know without cutting open how much is actual filter space and waste trap - with the Racor we have the benefit (obviously) of knowing the trap is clear and the active filter is full depth - no mystery in it and it's a much nicer system.
