Grant,
Are you planning on doing the timing belt yourself or are you going to take it somewhere to have it done? If you are going to have it done somewhere, let me know and I can recommend the place that did my timing belt service. They are off Glenwood Ave not too far from the Angus Barn.

Jim

Hey Jim,

I was going to do it myself to save myself the cost of labor honestly. I can get the belt for about 100 bucks online. I'll just switch it out in my garage.

The belt isn't the only thing you need to change when your in there. A normal job is also a new tensioner, 2 idlers and water pump.

ID parts has the whole kit for a good price

Yeah I know but getting the Liberty, plus the money I wasted on my other vehicles in the last two months trying to keep ONE running vehicle on the road has all but emptied everything I have. I figured putting a timing belt on it was better than nothing at all. Also I plan on putting a timing belt on the Liberty every 4 years or 50K whichever comes first, because I want this to last for the long haul. When I do it again in 4 years or 50K I will do the full kit then which should only be about 175K on the motor.

Actually I wanted to ask is there a way to tell if a Liberty already has the GDE Eco Tune on it? I got 174.9 miles on the first 1/4 tank of diesel driving it back to North Carolina. Now I haven't filled it up yet, but figuring I have a 22 gallon tank, which seems right, that would mean I was getting about 33mpg granted I have not done another fill up yet.

On a cold start it should briefly go over 1000 RPMS for a second or so, if it stays under a 1000, most likely not tuned.

I confirmed with Keith it does not have the Eco Tune on it.

Your mpg is a little less than what I am getting with my EGR disabled, I am getting about 29 mpg(UK) yours equates to 27 mpg(UK) Down side is I am paying $8.30 for a US gallon of diesel :banghead:

Congrats on the ride! Have you found the vandal that spray painted your front license plate?

And you won't be hearing about me complaining about diesel prices anytime soon! Turns out I'm only getting about 23mpg but still I'm happy with it!

Yeah I don't have the tune yet, trying to scrap the money together for the tune!

I did that with picture editor. I don't like putting my license plate online but I guess it really doesn't matter.

The timing belt isn't an easy job, and it does have to be done with precision or the results can be quite expensive. Be confident in your knowledge before you start. I understand about saving money, and approve of changing the belt if you can't say with certainty that it HAS been. If you want somebody experienced to help or do it for you, I travel around doing timing belts for anybody that might need it. I like to think that my rates (even with travel) are very competitive, and I don't think any mechanic has touched more CRDs than I have.

You sure you are talking about a TB when you said every 50K or 4 years and $100? Just curious in that you sound casual when in fact a TB change is not a trivial job. You sure you are not talking about your unibelt? Either way, welcome to our world. Love my CRD!

Serpentine belt should be about $35. I'd happily sell you that belt for $100! :jester:

Hey geordi, I I appreciate the offer, I'm just really strapped for money at the moment. Also I have done timing belts before on a 1990 Jetta and a 2000 New Beetle (<-- that one was a b&#$%). I've been reading how to do this one and for just replacing the timing belt only it seems very start forward. I have a garage full of tools, both power and air. I'm just waiting for my daughter to finish lunch and then I will be starting here in about 20 minutes!

The reason I say 4 years/50K is my 1990 Jetta had a timing belt that was replaced at 75K and when I got it was at 115K but had been about 5 years since it was done and the belt broke, ever since I'm been very strict when it comes to timing belts, I like to replace them in half the recommend time and no longer than 4 years later. I've rebuilt enough engines to know that sometimes just doing the work upfront will save you in the long run.

I got the timing belt replaced without any issues other than getting the belt over the tensioner pulley and setting the tensioner pulley ( I didn't have the exact tool for it). All I did was the timing belt, I didn't anything else, so it was much quicker, I did the method I used for doing the timing belt on my friend's 2000 New Beetle, I did gear to case marks but I also marked the timing belt itself, and counted teeth to make sure everything was set correctly. Glad its done and back together, not looking forward to doing everything next time though, that is doing to be a weekend job not a day job!
