The timing belt isn't an easy job, and it does have to be done with precision or the results can be quite expensive. Be confident in your knowledge before you start. I understand about saving money, and approve of changing the belt if you can't say with certainty that it HAS been. If you want somebody experienced to help or do it for you, I travel around doing timing belts for anybody that might need it. I like to think that my rates (even with travel) are very competitive, and I don't think any mechanic has touched more CRDs than I have.
Hey geordi, I I appreciate the offer, I'm just really strapped for money at the moment. Also I have done timing belts before on a 1990 Jetta and a 2000 New Beetle (<-- that one was a b&#$%). I've been reading how to do this one and for just replacing the timing belt only it seems very start forward. I have a garage full of tools, both power and air. I'm just waiting for my daughter to finish lunch and then I will be starting here in about 20 minutes!

You sure you are talking about a TB when you said every 50K or 4 years and $100? Just curious in that you sound casual when in fact a TB change is not a trivial job. You sure you are not talking about your unibelt? Either way, welcome to our world. Love my CRD!
The reason I say 4 years/50K is my 1990 Jetta had a timing belt that was replaced at 75K and when I got it was at 115K but had been about 5 years since it was done and the belt broke, ever since I'm been very strict when it comes to timing belts, I like to replace them in half the recommend time and no longer than 4 years later. I've rebuilt enough engines to know that sometimes just doing the work upfront will save you in the long run.

Serpentine belt should be about $35. I'd happily sell you that belt for $100!

BONUS my daughter helping get the '73 CJ-5 out the garage and getting ready to work on the CRD!
