I believe the 05 CRD does not have a wastegate....only used on the early Export CRDs with the fixed-vane turbo.
You need to pull off the vacuum pipe to the vane actuator and see if the actuator arm moves a bit.
And check for play on the turbo shaft.

Stupid question but have you checked that the CAC hoses have not ripped apart or come off?
My one hose recently blew off at one end...no power and a similar noise to yours. :?

Have you read Sams Noob Guide?....I think issues like this are covered there.

Check the underneath side of the black hose going from your air box to your turbo, specifically on the bottom of the clamp first.

None of the KJ CRDs, including the pre 05s have a waste gate as far as I can determine. Sounds like a boost leak maybe because of a split hose. Do you have a code?

You can check the airbox to turbo hose but since it is not boosted by the turbo at that point your only looking at a possible dirty air entry point.

Sounds the leak I had, turned out to be the larger CAC hose was split.

THe only way to confirm this is to remove the CAC hoses and visually inspect and feel for splits.

The only reason I think it's not tubes the noise happens emediatly. Seems like everyone with tubes happens above 2k Rpms.

And

The noise was a lot quiter when I put my hand on the turbo actuator (thought it was a wastgate)

The initial pop of the hoses blowing was over 2K - but after that it was leaking even at idle.

What makes you suspect the turbo has failed? Is there any play in the turbo's center shaft?

If it needs to be replaced, contact your local Bosch diesel fuel injector shop. They will most likely be a Garrett dealer, or know who is if they aren't.
Garrett DOES NOT REBUILD this turbo (yet - this might change) so if anyone asks you to buy a rebuilt, walk away.
There will NOT BE A CORE charge at all. If someone asks you for a core, walk away.
If someone asks you to pay significantly more or less than about $1200, RUN away!

Try IDparts.com if you can't source one locally from the Bosch shop.

This one on eBay is 650.
Is it not what I am looking for?

I love saving money but only if it will actually save me money and not require me to redo it.

ID parts is probably your best bet, at this point. GDE had them for less, but is out of stock.

That is Communist Chinese Trash. I wouldn't trust it to last 5000 miles. Their metallurgy is garbage, and the quality is the same as their "panasoonic" batteries or other knock-offs.

If you are asked to pay significantly more or less than $1200, something is wrong, walk away.
Genuine Garrett turbochargers sell for about $1200. Half that price? It is either a rebuilt or a fake. RUN AWAY.

Regardless of the politics some people will buy them, especially if they are just getting it ready to sell. An outlay of $1200 is a lot of money to many people, and a chance to get one for half that is hard to ignore - regardless of longevity. If it only lasts two years will they care? What's the turn over time on KJ ownetship?

I replaced not one but two failed turbos (that came with their respective engines) with true garrett originals. When my engine failed on the bottom end (factory bottom end, factory power / eco tune and more-often-than-required oil changes with proper oil) I chose to sell my CRD with full disclosure of whatever had happened to it. I wasn't interested in patching the hole, replacing the one bad rod / piston, and selling it off unannounced.

In some places, that kind of behavior would be illegal. In ALL places, it is just immoral to do that to a buyer.

Make the replacements as if you are planning to keep the vehicle. Even if you choose to sell it, the value of a quality repair will help the sale negotiation.

Yes, I treat others as I would like to be treated. I might make a quick-and-dirty repair if I don't have the time or cash to do it right the first time... But I also know that without fail, I will end up spending MORE in the long run because I will have to redo the job. I'm in the middle of replacing the front bearings on my TDI right now. This is a BEAR of a job, and no fun at all. I have already destroyed 1 bearing, a steering knuckle, and a bearing TOOL (China trash) because of problems with this job. Have I given up? No. I'm replacing the bearings with quality Made in the USA Federal Mogul bearings, and Moog tie rod ends and ball joints because the rest of this job sucks so much.

The current equipment has survived 291k miles. Hopefully the quality parts will survive equally as long, by then I may have forgotten how much this job sucks.

I got a hold of a garrett dealer.

he said its possible to salvage these turbos.
They bought a knock off to see the differences and stated they look identical but has no idea how long it will last.

I am buying a new one from the garrett dealer for just under 1000.

Good news Snow Board Man.

Does he repair the turbos himself?

Contact info?

I do know that Garrett is in the process of offering factory rebuilds on old turbos, that may be what he was referring to. I don't think our specific model is available yet, but what they are offering are other VNT turbos, so the possibility is there.

As for the price, that is a good deal you are getting. I guess the prices have come down a bit, that is a good thing!
Good luck with the new one.
