You know, the first step on the road to recovery is admitting you might have a problem.... :jester:

There's a high probability that you'll end up in a love hate relationship with this vehicle. You state that you can't afford to be in this position again which tells me you should probably stay away.

....but, since it's obvious you're hankering after one,

Read the forum as all the info you need to make your decision is contained within these pages. It's been discussed many many times.

The best way to look at this is like gambling, what is your risk tolerance, how much are you prepared to stake and what are the potential rewards.

The right vehicle at the right price might be worth a punt but don't get sucked into overpaying just because you think you want one.

..but like any form gambling it's addictive and you can easily loose your shirt. If it breaks repair costs can quickly spiral out of control and you can easily end up spending more fixing it than it's worth. You need to know when to cut yous losses.

There's members here that have been through multiple engines and multiple vehicles and still can't stay away. Some will even travel the lengths of the country to get their fix. Yeah, we all say "I can give it up whenever I want" but it's not always that simple.

All the problems people speak of...take them with a grain of salt. In my circle of friends, we own three, and none of them have issues beyond what you would expect for an almost 10 y/o vehicle. One is even a fully-prepped overlanding vehicle that goes on regular on/off road trips over distances of 1,000 miles or more.

Disable the EGR immediately until you get an EcoTune, do the timing belt/water pump, change all your fluids, do regular oil changes, and don't beat the doo doo out of it. You'll be fine, assuming the previous owner did the same.

I do agree with others who have stated... Can you work on your own vehicles? You'll need to with this one.

Most of us knew what we were getting into with these things. Those who didn't tend to be the ones who complain.

I second this. I've had issues with mine but you don't need to be a mechanic to own one. And if you need work done just search on here for a trusted mechanic and have it done there. I love mine and it's never ever left me stranded. Been a sweet little rig.

I'm going to test drive a gaser today. Any write-ups on their reliability?
