There is a bit of apples vs. oranges in this discussion. The Owner's Manual says 2 different things about towing the vehicle: 1) recreational towing like behind a motor home which can be done with 4 wheels on the ground for the 4-wheel drive vs. 2) disabled vehicle towing which should be done with all 4 wheels off the ground for the 4-wheel drive. I presume the difference is that for a disabled vehicle it may not be possible to get the transmission in the proper settings to perform a recreational tow.

If it was mine I'd insist on the disabled vehicle tow method or require the tow company to sign on the dotted line that they are responsible for any damage caused by a tow using a non-factory recommended method. Frankly flatbed tow equipment is pretty common.

@Tulmaster,

So, having spent huge sums of money on our vehicles this year, including a transmission in our van, I am certainly playing on the side of conservative measures. I'm wondering, though, why you chose to disconnect the driveline even with a dolly?

@Papaindigo,

I don't see anything in the owners manual differentiating between recreational towing and disabled towing. Is there a difference between towing using a flatbed versus a dolly? Is there more danger with a dolly?

06 KJ CRD owners manual available at http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals/. See pg 294 for recreational towing vs. pg 310 for disabled vehicle towing

I personally prefer flatbed towing for a disabled vehicle but there should be no problem with one end up and the other on a dolly behind a wrecker. Note this is distinct from one end down and the other up on a dolly behind a recreational vehicle. The point being to get the disabled vehicles wheels off the ground as I noted in my previous post.

If the issue is in the transfer case flatbed towing is required in place of a dolly.
