I thought the reason was the new epa pollution junk that made the US distribution/sales stop. I believe vw had some diesel models unavailable after 2006 for some time.
Everything reputable that I've read would confirm this.

I can't see where anyone said it was pulled due to problems. Since when do car makers care about that? Look at that stupid TFI ignition system that killed so many in Fords where the car would just stop and then splat...another vehicle ran over the top. No class action nor action by Ford. Only know about that as our Ford did it - found out through researching it - but solved the stupid problem without any Ford help. They don't even care if people are dying.

This was a time of great instability to the car market and the coin counters were even more at odds with the designers. The bottom line was more prominent than any other time in history. Perhaps it was a bad time to buy any new automobile.

Next time I'm negotiating to buy a Liberty 2.8, I'm going to point the seller to this thread. That should help me get the CRD for a steal!

:SOMBRERO: I'm not selling so this works for me.

As far as the rockers being junk, it is my understanding that they are intentionally weak to limit damage to other parts in the event of a timing belt failure.

If that's the case, that is some excellent anticipation thinking. Bet it didn't come from the engineering desks at Chrysler, LLC. :juggle:

Just to pick a slight nit. The rockers are not junk or particularly weak. They can fail due to wear for the same reason any rocker can fail due to wear. Typically wear failure is related to bearing failure which is directly related to bad lubrication. Bad lubrication can be poorly designed lube system, improper oil choice, infrequent oil/oil filter change, and the real kicker crud (e.g. soot) in the oil from emission systems. I'll agree soot is a real problem and it's only made worse, in my personal opinion, by long oil change intervals.

The rocker rollers are designed to collapse in the event a valve and pistion attempt to occupy the same space thereby saving the valve(s) and piston(s). This is a elegant but not particularly new solution to minimizing the damage caused when an interference engine (all diesels I think and some gas) loses the mechanical timing between the crank and the cam(s).

PAP...while you are correct. The engine with the EGR in use destroys the Rockers. VM and Jeep should have tested the engine and known this would have happened.

Good luck

You Gentlemen are the best. Too bad the brainless at Chrysler LLC didn't tune in here with the attitude of maybe learning something. The little CRD would have been one of their shining jewels instead of an abandoned experiment. You all probably could have saved them the heartaches that are going to flood Chrysler with the new overpriced experiment about to hit mainstream. I mentioned to my service director friend a while back, their TOP deisel tech couldn't diagnose and fix (Me, a rookie, had to advise Mr. HotsieTotsie diesel tech with the info gleened here) the old simple 2005 CRD. The response was, they're so expensive we won't sell many, if any.
