Took some time to wash my samcos, now there as clean as the day I bought them.
Now I am just waiting on my valve seals to arrive to have my cylinder head reassembled.

I have been spending time cleaning parts and getting stuff ready for reassembly. Tonight I figured out how my oil pressure and boost sensors will be mounted. The oil pressure sensor still fits behind the heat shield.

Why don't you just run a remote oil pressure sending unit line and mount the oil pressure sending unit where it is easy to get to and away from the heat? We do this with race cars all the time. The sending unit is what fails. They make sending unit brackets too.

Actually, I thought there was more then one plug in the oil gallery, even one up front? And using glow shift, you might want to make it easier to get to the sender, nice gauges, but not all that reliable.

See viewtopic.php?f=98&t=74754

dthdcrd - there are only 2 places that geordi and I could find to mount an oil pressure sending unit. 1) on a "T" adjacent to the OEM sending unit (NOTE per mrmopar64 this is actually not an "idiot" light sender although it functions as one because the pressure signal is not sent to a dash gauge but a dash "idiot" light) but that suffers from the same defect as the OEM unit as this is the very last place that would lose pressure if the turbo goes and blows oil and 2) the upper oil gallery. The upper oil gallery has 4 plugs. From the rear #1 is open just forward of the engine back plate and behind the same heat shield as the crank position sensor, #2 is used for the turbo feed, #3 is buried more or less under the turbo, and #4 is buried more or less under the oil cooler. We elected to use #1, which while tight, is heat shielded.

Notwithstanding the presence of the heat shield I do kind of like dthdcrd's link to http://www.maperformance.com/ams-remote ... Ogod1RwA4A . I'm not worried about heat but the idea of getting the sender up into the open where it can easily be changed if need be certainly has lots of merit especially if you have the OEM turbo.

Today I finally started on the reassembly. :D
I have the cylinder head in place with ARP studs torqued down and placed the new rockers in a container of oil.
New metal glow plugs installed too

Image

I also noticed this on top of the pistons, I would assume that it would be from the injectors doing their job.

Pretty productive night. All new rockers installed, valve cover/intake manifold installed. Fuel rail is attached, and all injectors installed.
Starting to look like a engine again.

Cool, it's shiny bright.

Was the cover acid washed?

The cylinder head and the valvecover/intake manifold were hot tank cleaned at my local shop, where they milled down the head down. He said it took 3 week away from the life of his cleaning solution. :jester: dirty little diesels.

The inner timing cover is put on and the engine is now timed. I used this autocraft tool along with the Sealey tool (VS777). Using both tools work out, it felt super solid when I torqued it. It took longer than I expected to get this done, but I'm happy with the results. After I timed it, I rotated the crankshaft twice, and all the pins fell right in place. Then I re-adjusted the tensioner. So now I have all the "hard" work behind me, now just have to relax and keep wrenchin'.

Finally have it all back together. So happy to hearing it running again. :D :D
Now I just need to install my EGT, Boost, and Oil Pressure Gauge.

Good to hear.
What torque did you use on the studs?

130 foot pounds on the inner, 120 on the outers. I used the torqueing sequence from the factory service manual.

Here's an idea.

I was looking for a clean spot and something I could reverse easy and inexpensively if I wanted to. Just pop the vent out and put a new one in. It's hard to see the EGT and oil pressure read out bc of the glare. Something you deal with on the glow shift gauges.....

I will probably use the mount that came with the gauge. I'm 6'4" so if it is any lower it would difficult to see. Only bad part is drilling a hole in the dash or the pillar. Hopefully will install it this weekend. 8)
