Any ideas on what to do? Had some snow/ice yesterday so I put it in 4wd part time. Then later on all the snow was melted so I went to put it back in to 2WD. My issue now is when I move it into 2WD my part time light goes off but then I have a sound like something is grinding almost like a card stuck in a bike wheel sound. I have not had any issues before with this and it just started last night. I have tried engaging and disengaging it from a dead stop, in neutral, in park, going from 10-55 mph, and even drove around in reverse for over a mile to see if it would disengage. When I leave it in 4WD the sounds go away and it drives just fine except its in 4wd and I have no need for it as its all dry pavement now.

Any ideas on what could cause this?

Ps as I typed this I was thinking maybe a front wheel bearing?
Doesnt make noise when pressure from 4wd is applied but when in 2wd it has that noise.

Need help thanks
Charles

Shifter mechanism/transfercase issue. Not wheel bearing, but I'm sure the experts will chime in with specifics.

Get underneath and look at the linkage on the transfer case. Everything hooked up? Everything feel okay when wiggled? Can you move the linkage further than the cable can?

Just got off the phone with the dealership. He says it has to do with my inner axel? not the cv joints but the axel? why would it not make noise in 4wd if the axel is shot doesnt make sense to me.

Grear! It looks like we have the same issue. I just did a little off roading today along some pretty rough muddy uneven trails and creek crossings. I had it in 4 wheel full time. Everything was perfect until I got back to pavement going home. I was at 20 mph when i put it back into 2wd like always. When I slowed down at stop sign it sounded grindy and rackety like my driver front wheel was falling off. I assume it is axle related. When I get up above 20 it goes away. Slower and it grinds and clanks and rattles. What gives? Is my jeep just sad?

SO i could be wrong here, but since we do not have locking hubs (free hubs) they spin into locking position when 4wd is activated. It has been a practice of mine, when done on the trail to backup about 50ish feet. This may be a myth but it helps to unbind the locking spindles. This may be a separate issue than what your experiencing, but have not had an issue with binding or grinding. I am in the mountains a bunch and regularly use my 4wd. My :2cents:

Everything up front moves all the time 4wd or not.. I think something on your cable is messed up.. It can be moved easily with a 10mm (i think that is the size) wrench.. Crawl under there and move the lever so the part where the cable attaches is furthest towards the rear of the truck

This happens to mine as well. Mine has the 242 Tcase with the full time option and after I get done using any range of 4wd I have to get underneath the jeep and use a prybar and hammer to knock the lever on the tcase back into 2wd from underneath the jeep. Once this didn't even work and I have to back in and out of my driveway so doing the reverse thing didn't work. I had to use the jeep for work the next day so I just put it in full time and drove it but the front seemed to bind a lot so I pulled in to some little shop and they drove it back and put it on their lift. I watched them drive it back and forth on their lift several times and then they pulled it back around and handed me the keys. Charged me $15 and said you gotta drive it forewards and backwards a few times with the lever in 2wd. I guess driving in and out of my driveway and all over town didn't do the trick? I've never had a problem with the 242 case that my giant jeep had but it had a mechanical linkage so maybe that's the difference. Cable shifters are undesirable.

Had the same problem with my o6 sport crd, solution was new tires. Had been trying to maximize tire life, but it seems that variations in tire size were causing this prob. . All the tires were same size new. Also check that tire air pressure is correct. I was able to correct this prob. by reducing pressure on the better tires, and increasing pressure on the worn tires.
