The heavens finally opened up and the stars aligned to finally give me a day and a half off this weekend. Going together awesome. Still have to modify the water pump elbow, and change the coolant plumbing to feed the turbo housing. Should hopefully have it together and running tomorrow.
Image
Had the injectors inspected, honed out 25% (50hp), cleaned and reassembled for $275 a piece.

Image
It fits!

Image

Image
Everything else clears perfect. Even the samcos fit/look right.

Image
Not sure what I'm going to do with all the room on the passenger side now.

Jeep goes in to the exhaust shop to get a full 3" made for it. While it in there I'm going to have them bend me some metal intercooler tubes. The list of jobs is still lengthy. Finish assembling engine, install rad/ intercooler/ grill etc. Install fuel tank, hook up wiring harness for in tank lift pump, hook up/ install a pillar gauges. Then its change engine/ trans fluid, top off coolant system, and give her a whirl.

Enjoy

250+HP Jeep Liberty CRD: http://youtu.be/n689L5Bwl9Q

It runs a lot better now that all the air is purged out. No more stumbling and idles smooth as silk. Hopefully get gauges and front clip on tomorrow night and get it tuned sometime this week. Tune will make this thing a whole nother animal.

Any plans to get it on a dyno?

Looks good. Should easily reach 100hp/L (280hp) with injectors and turbo. I can make 130hp/L with vw tdi's.

Tune really needs help idling. It burns my eyes just watching the video.

As long as your tranny and rear diff is stronger than your tractive effort you'll be ok.

Jeff ;-)

No plans to dyno it, but if the opportunity arises I'll jump on it. The jeep actually idles really well and has super quick throttle response. To me it sounds "free" compared to what it did. I know once kieth gets done with it its going to be perfect. Diesel fumes always look worse at night in the light, but its also been down for almost 8 months and has to cook all the nasty stuff off.
I don't think I've mentioned it, but while it was down I took advantage of it. The jeep got not only the aftermarket turbo, but also:

ARP studs
Completely deleted the egr
Weeks101 intake kit
Cummins in tank lift pump
Valve job
Boost/ EGT gauge
Head hot tanked and completely cleaned of all the crud

Also going to leave the engine fan off for the summer to see how it does. I have a full size truck to do all my towing. Next step is to get 2 new cams and have a performance grind done on em. This will be in the next 5-10k miles, will do a re-torque on the studs also.

Went and did a "cold" (hasn't been started all day) start and after the initial popping and revving it idles down and stumbles and dies. If I start it and hold it around 1,000-1,200 rpms you can hear it smooth out as it warms up. Once warm it idles smooth and revs fast. I mean fast, gas engine fast. You can tell the engine is breathing its full potential. Kieth is going to have his hands full gettin this baby smoothed out and dialed in.

Subscribed. Great build. I have wanted to see a build like this for quite awhile. I can't wait to see it running well.

Its been 9 years since they came out so its about time someone does SOMETHING with one. My main goal when this started was just to get this engine reliable, and simplify anything that could. I feel that now I have an engine that is only worried about delivering the right amount of fuel to mix with the air. It doesn't need to worry about controlling the turbo vanes or mixing in the egr too.
And since the ball bearing turbo only needs a tiny fraction of the oil the factory turbo needs, I should have plenty of pressure to keep the bottom end happy. I think its gonna be a great build, time and miles will tell...

I really think you should get a base tune from GDE and then get it on a dyno so you you can see what your afr is. Even after the tune you could have a nasty lean spot and blow it up. Better safe then sorry. All the work and money you have put into it and to waste it all if you need more fuel in a certain rpm and you don't know about it.

That thing is awesome diesel_guy, it makes mine sound like a couple of toys.

I would like to see a video when you can put the pedal to the metal and see what it can do.

None of what you said applies to a diesel engine.

Diesel engines can't run lean? News to me. It magically knows exactly how much fuel for how much air is forced in. My fault I'm to ignorant to know anything.

There is no proper fuel-air ratio for a diesel engine.
Diesel engines breath all the air they can every crankshaft rotation. (no vacuum)
Engine RPM and power are regulated by fuel only.

Diesels have vacuum just like gas engines,TD's have less because in most cases the intake is pressurized by the turbo.Diesels can run lean as they can also run rich.

Yep, except its backwards for a diesel, the leaner it is the cooler it runs, the richer it is the hotter it is and the blacker the smoke.

Been a long 21hr day, but pretty much got the jeep finished up. Now that everything is on it and there's a load on it, it starts and idles pretty smooth, but still has an unevenness to it. Still have to plumb the coolant to the turbo, solder the gauges lighting wire and ground wire, and put 2 new clips on the transmission cooler lines. Hoping to have it up to GDE later this morning. Off to bed for a couple of hours...

Talked to kieth at GDE earlier today. Jeep goes up tomorrow morning to get tuned, really anxious to see how she runs. Just wish I had an exhaust on it, its open at the downpipe. Oh well loud pipes save lives right?
