I have an 05 liberty with 215,000 miles on her. I just had the transfer case rebuilt with the steel gears new front brakes (CPR) and a right front wheel bearing all within the last 3 weeks( this got rid of part of my humming noise). A month or 2 prior to all this work I started getting a humming noise (and vibration in the floorboard and slight vibration in steering wheel) from the front end above 40 mph. The noise didn't change when making a turn telling me it wasn't a wheel bearing. I had the truck up on 4 jack stands and put it in full time 4 and couldn't get it to humm or vibrate. Now I can hear and feel the noise above 20 mph any ideas ? I put about 112 highway miles a day on her

Two items to check
Rear CV on the front driveshaft ( rear boot goes bad allowing dirt/moisture in and bearings go bad)
Intermediate shaft / CV on the right front, (plines fuse together/ wear out )

Both will cause humming like noises and vibrations and both are a common issue

Yes you can remove the front driveshaft and drive it no problem, you can also remove the CVs and Intermediate shaft and drive it. Make sure you plug up the hole on the front diff though if you remove the CVs

so I took out the front drive shaft and that took care of half of the noise you're right the boot was torn and dirt was in there making the shaft bad now I have to take out the right front CV joint to see if that takes care of the rest of the noise

Well thats 50% or maybe more of the problem then
Driveshaft is an easy and fairly cheap repair

What front driveshaft??
No you replace the end, takes maybe 10-15 minutes since you already have it out. Cost is under 65 bucks
http://www.driveshaftparts.com

Price: $45.00
Product ID : ME807

OH and another thing if you need any CVs up front, do not buy from *utozone etc, only NAPA remanned ones

That end of the shaft is good but the end Travolta to transfer case is garbage.

That is the transfer case end. The differential end doesn't often fail.

Just for the record, I used the same one for mine. Install was pretty easy and it works perfectly.
