06 CRD Libby. ran fine yesterday. suddenly it won't crank, won't do anything. the dash lights flash and it beeps at me. thought it was a dead battery, but getting a jump and charging the battery has not changed anything. bypassing the starter relay just results in a feint clicking sound in the engine bay. no bad fuses that I can find. swapped out the ASD fuse. battery shows 12.8 volts. have run out of ideas.

Did you check what your battery voltage measures with the ignition, lights, A/C and accessories on? It shouldn't drop much. A bad battery can measure 12.8V right up until the time it is asked to deliver that voltage to the starter, and they it drops too low. Even if it was "jump charged," it might not be taking the charge. You've checked the obvious battery connections and starter connections, right?

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid or loose/corroded battery cable

bad optima. when out and checked voltage drop when I bypass the starter relay and it drops to next to nothing. finally got my spare batt charged and installed and the jeep fires right up. yay? still not sure why I couldn't get it to start with the jumper cables. but that's another problem for another day.

oh, and just in case anyone thought I was free and clear, now the keyfob won't work at all. wtf.

Like I said, jump starting a bad battery won't necessarily do it: some batteries go bad with an internal short, so all that energy goes straight through the battery and just makes heat, rather than actually charging anything or making the available wattage go up enough. Be glad it was an easy problem!

that's why I disconnected the bad batt and jumped directly to the battery cables. but I didn't realize at the time that that method doesn't yield enough power to crank our little diesels. works great on gas cars though. oh well. lesson learned.
