Wether or not you mod your KJ, there are some items that should be included when you go on off-road trips. Costs should not be a issue when it comes to aids which will get you back on the pavement home. Basically I am referring to, spare Parts & tool kits. Here's what I suggest you never leave home without....

Spare Parts;
Spare Fuses
Zip Ties (assorted sizes).
Free All (works better than WD-40). Free All Oil
Auto Trans Fluid (alsoworks for pwr str fluid)
Motor oil.
1 pint brake fluid,
Small can wheel bearing grease.
Spare spark plugs.
15' ft - 10 gauge wire.
Crimp-on electrical connectors; 18 - 10 gauge.
Roll of bailing wire.
Small plumbers tape.
Rags (Free All Oil sells "Tub 'O Towels", they're great!), AND shop paper towels.
Hand Cleaner.
Tube/ high temp silicone sealer.
Loctite thread restorer.
JB Weld - Epoxy *Wetweld & *Stick.
Tire plugging repair kit ( Safety Seal ).
Misc nuts, bolts, cotter pins, screws, washers , lock washers, hose clamps.
Serpentine Belt - Gatorback # 4060875 (Auto Zone).

Tool Kit:
I prefer a Mastercraft roll bag <wrenches> & Mastercraft softsided bag for general tool box.
Combination Wrenches: ( 1/4 - 1") & ( 8 - 24mm ).
Socket Set: 3/8 drive w/ six point sockets (same sizes SAE & Metric).
Swivel handle & 12" drive ratchet ( 3/8 drive).
Vice Grip ( large & small).
Pliers ( combination & needle nose).
Wire crimping tool.
12" adjustable wrench.
Screw drivers ( large, med & small - standard & phillips).
Hack Saw ( w/ extra blades).
Scissors & Utility knife.
Prybar
Test Light ( elecrtical circuits ).
Allen Wrench set ( sae & metric ).
Torx Bit set.
Files: ( coarse & med fine ).
Work gloves.
3lb. sledgehammer.
8 or 12 ounce ball peen hammer.
Spare mag lite & spare parts for both. ( 3Cell & AA).
Jumper cables.

Of course this isn't a complete list of what you should carry, but it will save you incase you need these common items. Having a Currie EZ Tire Deflator and a air (tank) supply can be great items to carry. There's a lot of cool and unique items to carry / consider.

(clint, I wasn't sure if this was the best forum to post in, so move it, use or add to it as you or any mod see's fit).

It all depends on where you're going and for how long but I'd have to add:

fresh water (gallon a day per person)
basic first aid kit
flashlight
small shovel
tarp
maps of area
tow straps
jumper cables

And I always tell someone who's NOT going with me when I'm leaving, where I'm putting in, my general route, how long I should be gone, and where I'm pulling out.

Oh, and above all don't forget your common sense!

It is still a good idea to have a can of WD40 for 2 reasons that I can think of off hand, (1) It doubles as starter fluid and (2) It does not happen to us but it can happen to others water in the distributer cap, that stuff will suck the moisture out of a pool.

Don't forget your fire extinguisher!

A shovel was mentioned above and I wanted to suggest the Gerber folding shovel if you don't have room for a full size shovel. It's the same one that NATO uses and is much nicer that the old Army trenching shovels. When folded and placed in its pouch it fits perfectly in the little net on the passenger side of the cargo area.

Also add flares to your list. Aside from signaling purposes they can be used as an emergency fire starter.

I usually carry an extra fuel filter, since I've got the CRD now I know I'm going to.

If you use the ATF+4 for the tcase and tranny in the power steering, it will need to be flushed as soon as you can. I did it on a trip when a line burst, and since I used atf instead of power steering fluid, the repair back at the shop was not covered underwarranty, so another do it yourselfer .

The Lib does use regular Power steering Fluid.

That is a pretty extensive list, I think the only thing I add to my kit is extra line for my ARBs and some plumbers tape for the fittings.

There is actually a TSB saying to drain the power steering fluid and replace with ATF+4 to reduce noises when cold. I believe the number is 19-005-03.
