Hello - I usually post in the CRD section, but this noise is not related to the diesel engine.. Liberty 2005

I am new to this Liberty suspension design. I have always had solid axle jeeps.
This noise occurs randomly. It is most assuredly coming from the front passenger side, but its really hard to tell for sure.
It is a slight thunking noise that occurs - sometimes when I back-up or go forward from a full stop. Sometimes it will do it if I am turning over some kind of bump, like a driveway. The noise is more consistent out of 2-weel drive [any of the 4WD positions]. The noise does not usually happen if i'm going down the road or turning down the road. There is no noise on hard U-turns.

I had my neighbor look/listen, but he is a Toyota guy. He thought it might be a CV, but there is not constant rattle that a CV would make. Both CV boots are crack free and no CV grease is present.

Anyone else have this noise? or is it normal??

I am headed to the shop on Sat. to have this checked.

I'd check the lower ball joints first then go from there looking at the uppers then the bushings on the upper and lower a-arms.

It might be the motor mounts. When they go the CRDs they make noise when going in and out of gear, when going over speed bumps, and often when backing up. They seem to only last about 40K, so if you haven't done them recently they are worth checking. Once you have them out, if they rattle when you shake them they are bad.

I'd suggest also checking whether your brake shims and anti-rattle clips are in place (brake pad knock), and or something needs lube.

What about the dogbone balljoint over the rear axle?

..seems this might be the culprit. My regular shop thought it might be the control arm, but they were not 100% sure.
So, off to the Jeep dealer.

I finally nailed down my pesky front end noise by replacing both CV axles, and the intermediate shaft. Both boots were in perfect shape, and everything seemed pretty tight. But apparently not tight enough. Found out only after rebuilding the front driveshaft, tightening ball joints, and replacing the sway bar links in an effort to stop the occasional thunk.

After everything was said and done, I can feel a little extra play in each of the CV's now that they're removed. Neither made any clicking noises, and such. Just a light thunking under my feet, and vibes at highway speeds. Especially when cold.

Good luck! I also tried the dealer as well, and they said it was just my AT tires making excessive noise.
