Intent is awareness, dude - his pic is apocalypse (revelation, for you non Greek-speaking members): you'll just be removing the thin crimped flashing part of the lower casting to allow separation - the lower\upper mating surfaces are finished

I see what you're saying now, I looked at my new oem spare thermostat and I saw how the pieces are bound together. I'll chop up my existing unit that's on the Crd when I'll replace it with turbo diesel freak's thermostat and see how easy is to separate the pieces and how smooth the separated parts are.

Right now I see these potential issues:
- I'm not sure how straight and smooth the top and bottom part will be after separation as they were not meant to have a gasket in between like td freaks unit. I think this is not as big of a deal since a gasket could fix minor imperfections.
- I am not sure how long can we drill into the bottom housing and if it would support properly sized studs in it. Overall, I don't know how robust the whole modified unit will be.
- I do not know what thermostat will fit in the housing. This is my main concern right now
- even though this is a great idea, I do not know how reliable the unit will be over time. It depends also on how well this is done.

To clarify, I am not criticizing the idea, I think is a great one and we need to congratulate dh100m for putting it practice. But, I wonder why nobody yet thought about it, including kap and td freak. I believe the main reason was finding a thermostat that would fit without modifications of the housing.

Who is 'kap'? I've seen that handle mentioned B4, but nothing further - or, td freak?

I would have done this way back when, along with the other stuff, had the li'l puffer been my daily ride - glad to see someone else had the mechanical inclination to do it, and really glad he posted that pic, verifying my suppositions

Kap = kapalczynski and TD Freak is TURBO-DIESEL-FREAK. Both invested quite a lot of time in researching this topic and td freak went further and designed a thermostat from scratch:

Go through this thread to see some pics if you want.

I wouldn't be surprised if searching for an appropriate sized band clamp would work like a charm to hold the 2 halves together.
I have a box of old stainless band clamps left over from my milk pipe repair days.. they would hold 2 flat flanged pipe together with a simple flat rubber seal in between.

Just keep a little of the 'lip' to keep the top centered, and to hold a gasket or rubber seal in place.

Whatever dh100m is using for the top, that's not the OE jeep top, so he must have sourced a new top neck. Or maybe I'm wrong, and the camera angle is deceptive?

I know everyone is eager but don't forget you also need the custom spacer or at least the dimensions if you have the tools to make your own.

Also, did they make any modifications to the housing at any time? If so, the spacer thickness may need to change.

Some better shots of a housing split apart without spacer as dirtmover mentioned. issues are a thermo that will work, and how to hold the two castings back together. Ideas???

The Meziere housing uses a Chevy size, so do a search, and it will show recomended tstats.
