Looks like the 8 pad design (the interface and loom even more so) would be a "neat and tidy" install, ...but leaves room for lots of failure in the durability dept.
What do ya do when one of the buttons stops working?
In terms of installing anything that has a bank of 3 or more switches in it, I DON'T recommend installing anything in either of the center consoles. That many switches starts to become nest of wires pretty quickly, and the switches just start to make removing those panels or opening the compartment under the steering wheel very difficult. (if your CB is there, you may already know this?)
What I DO recommend (depending on switch bank size) is the
very small panel, to the right of the steering wheel, above the panel that opens under the steering wheel. I only recently discovered this spot when I was looking for a spot to install a 3/4 switch bank. There are many reasons this is a great spot.
First: This panel would be cheap to replace if you needed to return it to stock, etc.
Second: There is a fairly large "dead" space for your hardware and wires, immediately behind this panel.
3rd: It isn't actually that far away from the grommet in your firewall, so things don't crazy with wires.
4th: I mainly steer with my left hand, and tend to have my right hand on the gear shifter, center console, or operating cruise control buttons, etc. Having the switch, somewhat behind the lever on the right side of the steering column, makes it
very easy and comfortable to reach in a hurry without having to look for it. (eg: turning off your auxiliary lights when you all of a sudden have on coming traffic. wink-wink, nudge-nudge.)
The panel is approx. 1.75"H x 6"W, and sits just behind the lever on the right side of the steering wheel. There are two tabs (that are kind of riveted/melted) that hold the panel from the backside. You can see them from the backside if you open the panel under the steering wheel. I broke both prying the panel off, but only because I knew it all would be discarded anyhow. The space behind the panel is about 2.5"H x 6"W x 8"D. The switch bank I installed, had two screws, one at either end to hold it, and they actually ended up lining up with the tabs that held the panel in place. It came out looking pretty awesome.
