Key to vertical welding is remember that gravity wants to pull the puddle down. I run a bit colder (just few amps) when i run vertical

I'll tighten those bad boys up tomorrow during class. Then post results after a little more practice.

Today was the last day of class for this week, we had a little project. Image

Had to use an acetylene and Diamond tipped dremel thing to make it.
It started as a 6x3" plate and ended up like this Image

Had some time at the end of the day to mess around and had a chance to use a CAC for the first time: Image

Image

1" plate with 1/4" backer and it's blows through it like butter. Image

So my school schedule changed and I had a couple extra days off before going back in. We are now being graded on our work at the booth instead of still being an introductory type class.

We are now back to using 6010 hardcore for the next several weeks. I had been using 7018 for a while and hadn't touched 6010 during that time so the transition was a wee bit rough.

Here is my first go after the break: Image

Second attempt on the backside of the first photos plate: Image

Then the teacher showed me something new and it worked out better for me.

I walked into clas this morning and the first thing i saw was this - Image

After chuckling for a few minutes I headed to the shop with the rest of the class to start our first 1G ( flat position ) groove welds. I forgot to get a picture of the empty groove tacked up with the backer. But trust me when I say you didn't miss anything.... Haha

Image

And the finished product with a passing grade which was unexpected. Lol

We've been practicing everything we've learned thus far and have put in some serious time go get better with SMAW. I believe mig and or tig starts in a few weeks so that's something to look forward too. In the mean time I'm going to cut off my bent rock rail and attempt to straiten it out either tomorrow or next week after class. First big out of school project will be to help a classmate fix his rust problems on his old F150 and maybe fab up some bumpers.

Been in class more often lately, we are starting to test out (not certify) for our mid terms, 6010 and 7018 electrodes on flats, fillets, overheads 2G etc. This is my 2G fillet weld with 7018 running 105 amps. It says vertical on the plate but it's labeled incorrectly.

Image

Didn't have a lot of time to devote to each piece as we had multiple projects to turn in during the day.
Here is the finished product as of my current 2G skill level: Image

In a few more weeks we will be moving on towards pipe fitting/cutting. More SMAW..... !
I think I'll hold off on fixing my drivers side rock rail until we get into mig. I'd rather it not look like crap... Haha.

Glad to hear you are learning how to weld. "Weld for a man and he will be happy for a day. Teach a man to weld and he will be happy for life!" You have to start somewhere and I feel you made the right choice going to a class to learn. I have been around a lot of people who call themselves welders and advertise that fact, then you see how they actually weld and then you thank yourself for going to night school.

Today was our 10th week in the shop, we had a final project to work on, and I also needed to catch up on some mid terms. Suffice to say some of my work was a little rushed....

Here was our final for one of the classes, all done with 7018:
Image

Cut the pieces out using 1/4" since we were out of 3/8":
Image

Tacked up the "H" Image

Finished product, VOILA!

Today was our last day running SMAW for a short while until we near the end of the course. Next up is MIG!!! :o   :BINGO:

Here are a few things I did at the end of class today. (3F, 4F and 4G in 7018)
Image

Image

Image

The guy who runs the shop came into our classroom first thing this morning, said he needed one volunteer but didn't say what you would be doing. I had a few ARMY flashbacks and shot both hands straight up and said..... ME ME ME MEMEMEMEMEMEMEM! :jester:

A few other guys also volunteered but were not fast enough.... :goink:

I finished my assignments in the shop and approached the teacher asking what needed to be done. He handed me a broom, dustpan and had me sweep out behind the welding booths. Took me about 45 minutes and I was dripping sweat. Headed back to him told him I was done and he told me to go into the tool room with him. He then opened a "treasure" (tool) chest.
And said take a few things for your troubles.....

Image I love freebies!

I got out December 2012, it's been great having a beard and doing my out thing without having to worry about PT formations. Never looked back! LoL

Haha, I'm thinking of getting out so I can start settling in and make roots...but getting out kind of terrifies me haha. Health insurance and other things of that nature are weird...military has it easy (minus deployments haha).

Spent 5 hours in the shop today learning how to set up a spool on the machine so I could run FCAW .045 dual shield with a 75/25 Argon to Co2 ratio. ( M.I.G ).

This was my first time with MIG officially so I think the few pieces I did turned out fairly well for a new guy.

First up a few beads, still dialing in my settings. Image

Same plate as the above photo and I also tried running some dimes for the first time. Image

My first 3F - Image

Second six pass 3F (vertical) - Image

Tried my hand at 2F, was going left to right, started out strong then sneezed, stopped. And proceeding to mess it all up
Image

Second attempt at a 6 pass 2F -Image

Looking good!!! Once they teach yall how to manipulate the puddle you can stack dimes pretty nicely.
