 Post subject: Biggest Offroad Looking Tires On Stock Rims/Suspension

Hi guys Kris here,

First off this is my first post and I'm new here to LOST. All your jeeps look awesome and I hope mine looks the same soon! So my mom bought this jeep new in 2012 and now she's going to get a wrangler and give me her old libby. I just love this jeep! I don't want to lift it YET but I do want to get some off road looking tires for now. Its a 2012 liberty Limited with the 18" rims and right now its got 235/16/R18 tires on them but they just look like regular tires. Can I put a off road looking tire on the 18" rims or will they rub/cause clearance issues? Do I have to get 16" rims? Spacers? Can I go wider/taller? Will it cause ESP issues when turning?

Any help would be great!

first so we can properly determine the safest tire size for your KK is to measure from the center of the wheel to the fender flare on all 4 tires. just to see how much the springs have sagged. I wouldn't be supprised if their shot already.

16" rims are more common for off roading. 18"s are more "bling" "bling".

I believe only BFG makes an AT for 18" rims that can fit under a KK. I'd recommend buying some 16s so you actually have some options for tire sizes. If stock you won't need spacers. Largest stock height tire is 245/70R16. No ESP because your stock. ESP goes off because of the angles caused by lifting throwing the Steering Angle Sensors out of whack.

Thanks for all the info guys! Ill take some measurments of the spacing between the axles and fender flares and post them tommrow. But it looks like ill have to get some 16" rims then. But your saying that the biggest I can get is 245/70/R16?

Correct. if you have any plan on lifting it, save the money! your going to end up paying for an alignment twice and if there is any plan in larger tires afterwards, those new 245/70s are a waste, if you get larger.


now 245/70s and 245/75s aren't much of a difference, so if you do plan on lifting keep that in mind. but if you want the largest possible tire after the lift 265/70s I believe are the absolute largest with a 3-4" lift (trimming involved).

if you need rims, wrangler Moabs go great with KKs.

once you lift, you don't stop!

265/75R16s are the largest. Just have to pound the pinch weld flat. Very little trimming of the inner fender liner was needed to prevent plastic rub.

Thanks for the verification. I wouldn't have minded getting 265s! Not sure if I have ever seen those on 16"s in person. 245s are large enough for me though. Less tire to shine! :-)r

It's been basically all said. 245/70-16 will clear stock. We tend to go by 16" sizes because it's what we tend to all run and is more suited for off-roading. Throw that size isn't a tire calculator and look up the similar sizes for 18s. Then go shopping. All terrains and mud terrains will be limited in the sizes you can run stock on a KK. Figure out a size and what you're looking for and we can help you with tires from there.

Lift it 2.5"(suggest spring lifts) and you can run 245/75-16s or 265/70-16. Same height, but the 265 is wider. 3.5-4" will clear 265/75-16(32s), but you will need to regear to atleast 4.10s.

If the tires are good and you don't do a ton of wheeling. I say keep it stock. Save up for a lift, new tires, and rims if you decide to do so and throw it all in at once. It's how I did it, but I had 16s so it was a little cheaper.

I have that lift. it rides roughish, though I don't mind the rough ride at all.

spring based lifts are more effective and a lot more comfortable. expect to pay a grand on a real lift.

look up jeepinbyal on google. any lift you need or want, hes got it! try to stay away from the spacers, because if you already are saging, the spacers are just going to make it worse!!!


if you do get the kkn25 spacers, talk to me, im one of two KKs on here that have the kkn25 "lift", im on here just about every day. there were a lot of issues that could have been avoided if the instructions said what was for what. also, issues that shouldn't be present on a lift.

define tall? because my 3" lift to me is not tall. 6" is tall, but our KKs really cant handle anything past 4" to 4.5".

those links are kits, but are plenty of products that can be mix matched. not many KKs on here run 1.5" lifts. most are stock or are lifted around 3".


like stated above, if your interested in a lift some time down the road, hold off on the tires.

if your getting an actual 3" lift, 245 and 265s will work. trimming and pounding is most likely needed on the 265/70s.

for the actual 3" lift 245/75 and 245/70.

I say actual 3" lift because a 3" is an actual 3.5" lift.

my 2.5" spacers gave me 3.25" of lift. just under 4K miles, springs sagged enough for me to need a full spring overhaul.
