So my windshield wipers have been running slow for about a week now. Every time I run them they seemed to run slower. Today they stopped. Just slowed to a halt and gave out. Thankfully it wasn't raining. (Although it's supposed to all day tomorrow. Lovely.)

I suspect that the motor has been dying on it and finally gave up the ghost. Anyone done a replacement on one of these? I'm going to have to get under there and fix it right away.

Is this maybe a recall item? I read somewhere that some 2008's were recalled for faulty wiper motors. If I can get it fixed for free, why not?

There was a recall for the 08 wiper motors, Recall K24. This recall applies only to vehicles built from May 19, 2008 through June 28, 2008. If your rig was built in that time span, then it should be covered.
viewtopic.php?f=104&t=56151 under ; 2008 KK TSB's ALL ENGINES

EDIT:
Even if your rig does not qualify, download the recall notice and print it out. It has the instructions for replacing the motor.

Thanks Scar0, I'll do that.

Unfortunately for me, I purchased my Liberty on March 15th of 2008, before the recall period. (dang!)

I have been researching it more since I first posted, and it could also be a corroded ground wire or wiring harness issue. I'm well versed in wire soldering and repair, so if that is all it is then it could be a much simpler fix; Just clean the contacts with sandpaper and maybe replace some corroded bits of wire, then heat shrink it all up and away we go!

I'll check it out this evening after work.

Huh. Go figure. Got out of work, got in the KK, started it up and the wipers worked again! They were a bit slow at first, but sped up to normal speed after a minute. Weird. I have no idea what is going on now.

I think your on the right track. A bad connection/poor ground could be causing this. Or it could be the brushes in the motor are worn down.

if Wearyman is saying that they worked good and keep getting slower, the brushes are mostlikley shot. if you turn on the wipers and start sniffing around that area and smell a burning. that motor is shot. even if the wipers don't move, you should be able to smell a burning scent if its the motor.

I doubt its a connection issue since it worked and slowly got worse.

Just like worn brushes in the motor, a corroded + connection or ground connection will limit the amount of voltage/amperage getting to/from the motor. Which can cause the motor to run slowly or not at all.
I just went through this problem with my father in laws 55 Ford PU. The wipers would sometimes not work, or they would work but at a reduced speed. The ground connection point was very rusted and was making a poor connection. Cleaned it up and the wipers work great now. Being it is a 6 volt + ground system it was more difficult to track down the issue, but we did it!

Either way (brushes or connection) it will cause a heat build up and possible burning smell.
Wearyman will have to do more investigation to determine what the issue is...

Edit: Posted wrong year it is a 55 Ford not 56.

Actually, the problem self-resolved. Once the weather started warming up in WNY the wipers went back to normal function. I suspect I just need to lube the gearbox or arm hinges.
