When I pulled my engine of of my tractor, the head had already been removed. Attaching the hoist was easy because I used a pair of head bolts. Now that it's all assembled and ready to go back in, I don't have that option. I see the obvious lift eye bolted to the front of the engine, but what about the rear? What have you been attaching to?

Thanks,
Mike

Are you fully assembled? The only thing I would think of would still be head bolts - but you would need to remove the valve cover to do that.

Also, please tell us that you installed ARP studs and not the useless factory TTY bolts, right?

I wrapped a chain around the rear of the exhaust manifold on the passenger side right where the EGR crossover tube connects and around the EGR tube on the passenger side. Hooked this to the hoist hook in conjunction with a chain from the front lifting point.

Oly moly....... there has to be a better point of connection than that.

Where did the factory guys connect to?

Use front eye and a heavy ratchet strap for rear , just watch how you route strap as to not damage anything , good luck and it helps to have a leveler for hoist

CRD engine weight is about 500 lbs. Rear chain is supporting about half that or ~250 lbs or about ~125lbs. on each side. Plenty strong enough. Drivers side chain at EGR pipe close to EGR cooler.
Many mount a plate to the intake manifold of a V8 engine at the carb studs and lift the entire weight with (4) 5/16" bolts supporting the entire weight of the engine.

Hi Racer. Gee. I think I have an idea why you are in on this thread.... LOL

Clarification for others, and curious about feedback: When doing a head gasket replacement, due to the confined quarters and the way this engine is fitted in the Lib, is it just easier to pull the while frakking engine, do the work, and replace the engine back in the vehicle?

Confined quarters? For a head gasket replacement? There is a ton of stuff to remove, yes... But that leaves you a lot of room to play in. How much room are you looking for? Then there is the difficulty of re-inserting a built engine without taking the whole thing apart again.

x2 for ratchet strap. A thick one, and a load leveler. The leveler I got from Harbor freight is actually surprisingly nice and invaluable for these engines. I think it was like $35

Thanks guys. One of concerns is that I still need to get the oil pan and adapter plate on. The engine stand is in the way of the adapter plate, and the torque sequence on the oil pan requires the adapter plate to be installed first. I'm ok with putting a chain around the exhaust manifold, but the egt tube seems a bit thin. I might they abcombo of the exhaust manifold and the alternator bracket. That might balance things enough to get it back in. I appreciate all the ideas. Please keep them coming.

Mike

cast iron manifolds like to crack, so that method scares me, and then there's the head that it's attached to :dead:

Good points. There's a couple of tapped holes at the lower rear end of the block on both sides. Maybe I'll fab up a couple of brackets using those holes.

The factory used the two tapped holes on back of head for a rear lift bracket with eyelet similar to the front of engine. It provides a good balance point when using a chain.

I was moving on to those in my thinking. I couldn't remember if the adapter nplate attached to those or not. Thanks Keith!

At the 'factory'.. the engine and trans are assembled to the cradle, which has most of the front driveline and the major harnesses and plumbing are also attached, along with the rear trans cross member. Call it a pre assembled sub assembly. Then it's aligned to the body, and RAISED up into the vehicle. no scratched paint, dents, bloody hands.. Time wise, it's a no brainer. you can't be screwing around on the assembly line hooking up a myriad of connections. There just isn't enough time or room for everybody to do their job on a moving vehicle. But hooking up few main connectors and a few hose connections is a piece of cake.
I was considering doing this to mine for removal... but my lifting jig is pre occupied with another project. Without that lift, going out the top really the only way.
I know this is an old thread, I found it looking to see how other's have pulled their engine. Looks like a sling towards the rear is how I'll go this time.

I built a jig that attaches to the rear of the head (two bolt holes GDE mentioned)for complete engine installs (minus the fuel rail), and I pull the head and use some head bolts in the block with chain for removal.
