Shifted in to full-time 4wd this morning, but Jeep clearly went into part-time 4wd. Pulled into parking lot and made sure tire pressures were all even, backed up, etc. As I pulled out it still felt like part time as I was doing a light turn and then I heard loud clunk from what seemed about mid jeep (it has never made that type of sound before when engaging). After that it felt more like full-time in that I could turn, steering was a little heavier/more noise from the front end. I think it was just the transfer case popping in but I am about to drive cross country so I want to make sure. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for to make sure I did not break something?

Mine does this to me sometimes when going into/out of part time. I have a 231, no full time.

But it sounds like, from the pop or bang noise, that you weren't fully engaged? Like almost in gear but not quite.

The question is, can your tcase to do it again? If you can and it happens again and again, I would suspect maybe out of adjustment linkage??

Maybe someone else could chime in? I am pretty sure there is a standard procedure for checking your tcase linkage. I just don't know it. The xj I had was pretty straight forward.

Sometimes the PartTime locking mechanism hangs up when moving between the different positions. So yes, that clunk was the locking mechanism popping out of the "locked" position.
This transfer case is just weird like that.
Sometimes it helps to put the transmission in N, while slowly rolling, when shifting into any of the 4wd positions.

Appreciate the replies. Shifted in and out a couple of times without any more noise. Went ahead and changed transfer case fluid and will try some more, but most importantly it appears to be working.
