So the transmission died in my CRD about 8 months ago and has been waiting for another. Well today I pulled the trigger on a used tranny. I paid $750 for a 65rfe out of a 13' ram truck with 418 miles on it. The 65rfe is identical to the 545rfe in every way, just different programming. I will keep you posted with pics when I install. I have a Euro TC that I will use with this. Do you think I should bother with the Transgo kit?

Mine also went kaput . I had it on back burner for a while and wanted to get this done as soon as i had some cash but murphy had other ideas. So now the hunt for an affordable solution is on

I guess as long as all the connectors work and the TCM doesnt freak out you will be good to go.

I'm interested in the 66rfe.
Apparently its just like 65rfe but with 68rfe gear sets, which includes a slightly better overdrive gear (5th).
So if a 545rfe is just like a 65rfe...
and 68rfe gears will fit inside a 65rfe...
Does that mean 68rfe gears will fit inside a 545rfe???

Sorry i know it has been answered before but i found a replacement tranny and was wondering about how much transmission oil should i get ? 14 or 13 quarts for complete Re & Re and what kind?

What kind is easy, same as what Owner's Manual says ATF+4 but get name brand not "house brand" cheap stuff. How much is less obvious but best guess is ca. 14qts for a dry tranny/torque converter full fill; within reason more is better than less. Be sure to use name brand filters.

For what it's worth if I was in that far I'd install the new upgraded front pump and Euro torque converter and be sure to check engine rear main seal for any sign of leaking.

The transmission will be here Friday. I ordered a filter kit and plan to do the transgo on the valve body. Since it is a 2013, it most likely already has the upgraded pump. I already have a Euro TC that I replaced, but the slipping turned out to be the transmission going out.

The 68rfe has a bigger shaft and different gearing, but same housing.

That 66RFE does sound awesome! Lower 1st and 2nd gear, taller 5th(6th). The only thing is that jump from 2nd to 3rd(4th) will be a bit bigger.

No. When he's talking identical, he's referring to ratios, not actual gears'n'stuff - the thru-shafts in the 68RFE are tremendously larger than those in the 545RFE unit, necessitated by the huge torque input from the big CUMMINS - all clutch-paks and planetary gearing were re-designed around the larger shafts.

However, the transmission case is identical-sized, using the same pan gasket, valvebody plates, etc - the bell-housing size was increased to accept the 13" dia torque converter required to transmit the output of the big six

The best option to save a bundle and get R done is find a used tranny out of a Ram 1500 with Hemi engine and swap. This will be such an effective upgrade no need to mess with Euro TC or anything else as it exceeds the specs in our application. The best part you can find these complete trannies for about the same price as an Euro TC.

Transmission bell housing arrived cracked. Looks like when they removed it, they missed a bolt at the starter and it made a few tears in the bell housing. Boo. Other that that, it seemed ok. Fluid is very clean. Thought about getting it repaired, but after I spun the TC a few times, it seems to be rubbing slightly on the pump cover which makes me a little hesitant installing. My neighbor thinks the input shaft could be slightly bent. Going to return and try again with another.

Hind sight is 20/20 but if I was looking for this stuff online local craigslist will be my first option and on eBay I only buy stuff which is listed as reman/rebuilt as used listings are nothing but trouble.I did find couple complete transmissions on CL for 700 bucks or so (asking).good lick

From allpar.com. So not sure the 66RFE is an option.

any update on your jeep in Pacific north west i found number of Ram trannies for 600 bucks ready to be swapped.

not yet. About the pull the trigger on another with 9,000 miles on it. I just need to find a way to go pick it up.

Not trying to dig up a dead thread but I actually just completed this swap. 2005 CRD liberty. I used the shift solenoid from my shot 545rfe and the valve body from the 65rfe. Shifted and ran amazing... but when manually shifting into first or second my CEL comes on and shows P0700 MIL request. Then goes into limp mode and I have to clear all codes and reset by pulling the battery also had occasional hard downshifts to first. So I swapped to using the 545rfe valve body and shift solenoid and the shifts aren't as firm but very true and the transmission just feels all around 1000% better... but occasionally on harder takeoffs the CEL will come back and it feels like the transmission is coming out of gear or going directly into neutral. Codes show P0700 with various other codes for invalid gear ratio (been different gears each time). Any advice on how to remedy this issue. It's quick to reset the CEL but kind of annoying if I'm in a hurry.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm going to be swapping in a new trans and if the 65RFE works I'd prefer that as I get the new pump!
