Hi folks,

I have read the NOOB guide!

I'm having starting problems and would like to see what fuel pressure is on the rail. I have one off those elm327 wifi tools that interfaces with my iphone, but I cannot ind a ap that shows fuel pressure. I can use an android if need be. Please let me know if you happen to have any experience with this. Thanks a bunch

I'm pushing diesel thru the fuel pressure control solinoid on the rail while cranking. is this for sure a bad solinoid? Is there a good way to test injectors? I get a intermittent spray evry now and then

I use TorquePro with my android tablet.
Dont know what would work best on an iphone.
As far as I know, there is no inexpensive OBD tool that will give you direct readings from the fuel rail pressure sensor. TorquePro displays fuel rail pressure but it is demanded rail pressure from the ECU. Not actual sensed rail pressure.
But dont worry about actual rail pressure yet.

Step 1.
What codes are you getting?
If no codes, then you dont have a rail pressure problem.

Step 2.
Does the engine ever start and run?
If it does, do you have full power or limited power?

ok, thanks guys. I do have a lift pump and guage reading 8 psi at the filter head. I have not installed a clear line to the high pressure pump but that might be what need to do. I guess I just figured that was good.

I'm getting a injector to fire every few seconds at random, but never runs or fires more then once.

I'm gonna go work on it.

Looks like there is no need for the ap, thanks

Is there a way to test the ecu? I'm concerned I fried it whith charging a bunch.

also.... the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail is allowing quite a bit of fuel by while cranking. I have a glass jar half full just from yesterday. I swapped out the regulator and rail with a supposed good used one and it still leaks though.
is it normal for a little bit of fuel to leak by when cranking? I have read that is supposed to be closed and no fuel to pass by.

Yes the pressure control valve (PCV) at the end of the fuel rail is supposed to be fully closed when starting the engjne. But rail pressure can still be high enough to keep it slightly open.

Have you pulled any codes yet? What are they?

I have had codes but they were all related to me having things unplugged intentionally like the pcv. I clear them out. Right now cranking away I never get a code.
I did the clear fuel line and I cannot seem to purge the air. The air is trapped mid hose, I pump the primer and run the intake lift pump to 8psi but I cannot get rid of the air and more air comes in somewhere and then it drains down into the cp3 and fills up with air. A video would be ideal. Something has got to be wrong here video coming!

put your fuel container on roof (gravity feed ) pinch test return hose from real (the one you use to test pressure regulator ) just to see if you are losing rail pressure there , if this thing starts then ,must check injectors return flow , or simply go with procedure that Flash did testing his rig

Ok, I'm not sure I fully understand. How will I know I'm losing rail pressure? Won't the fpv dump pressure while cranking after a certain point? I would think it would have to otherwise it would over pressure possibly. I picked up a used fuel rail with fpv, a cp3 and mprop yesterday. So I have some testing/ part swapping to do tonight.

I seriously doubt that your CP3 is bad.

Your video seems to indicate a air in fuel problem although I can figure out why.
I would do this first: disconnect the filter to cp3 hose, attach your own 3/8 hose and run that into a big jar or something. Just turn the key on and let your lift pump fill up the jar. Turn the key off and do it again until no air comes out.
Then re attach the filter to CP3 hose.

Another thing to try.
Disconnect the fuel rail pressure sensor and try to start the engine.
This will force the rail pressure solenoid to be fully closed.
If it starts, runs, and is drivable you will know that the rail pressure solenoid is good.

Where did you get all those parts from? Do you have some sort of CRD junkyard nearby?

when cranking , no fuel at fuel press solenoid ,when engine starts then it will open and realize small amount of fuel and close again at idle speed . as Flash suggested check that lift pump fuel delivery to cp3 , remove t connects from top of injectors crank it see if they returning excessive fuel ,but you need to monitor rail pressure , 1st low pressure side to cp3 must be 100 % good (plunger on top of filter hosing must hold pressure and no any air inside)

Ok, quick update to what I have done prior to reading your guy's posts. I replaced the fuel rail with sensor and fpv bleed and tested. Nothing same thing crank no start. I swapped the mprop for the used one I bought. First crank it fired and sputtered ( there is hope!!!!!!!!!'). But it is fairly short lived as I have to crank, sputter fire. Wait to build up pressure again before it will barely fire a few times again. It will only start after I let it sit for a minute. I do have it on a battery charger but the bat does not seem to low. I'm letting it charge. But finally I have it firing somewhat, a huuuuuuuge success. I do think it is air in the fuel at this point.

It will start and run tough for a few seconds but kind of die off. Then will not restart unless I leave it for a bit. But there is fuel in the line going to the cp3. Kind of weird, I almost feel the cp3 pump is not building enough pressure or quick enough.

Just make double sure that there is not air in fuel and that flow from the tank through the fuel filter is good. If the problem is with the fuel rail pressure solenoid, pressure sensor, or CP3, there should be a code set.
Try unplugging the MPROP to see if it starts and runs. This will set a code but if it runs you will know that the CP3 and rail pressure solenoid are good.

It acts like there is sir in the fuel but I cracked and bleed each injector and there is visibly fuel in the line down to the cp3. It sounds like a carb running out of fuel when it dies after 3 seconds. I did not get to work on it yesterday. Do you think the pressure gauge install or auto meter electrical connector would help? I could order that to help expedite diagnosis. The fpv wad definitely letting fuel by after a little bit of cranking just like the other two fpv' that have been in there. I may have to do another video for a visual of what's going on. I will try the mprop disconnected. I did do that the first crank and it behaved the same, but I will try again after all the bleeding I have done.

what happens when you check injectors ,how mach fuel is coming out from individual cups , if any injector leak of more than others? why is fuel coming out that much out of fcv ? half a bottle when cranking is way to much. Is this engine mechanically ok , cylinder compression ,valves etc , any smoke on exhaust? if disconnecting glow plugs and spray small amount of eater in air box to see if is at least is running on starting fluid ?? but don't overspray.
