Hey everyone, I am new to the forum but not a complete newb with diesels. We own 5 VW diesel's in my family so I have a craving for that clacking engine.
I've been on a hunt for a Jeep Cherokee CRD for a while but they are hard to come by and for a good price but recently I came across a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD.
The add indicates:

Leaks fuel and does not run right
Will run but not well
For sale as is
Probably will not pass safety or etest
Now I've come across the Noob thread in this section and also came across this fuel leak thread:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54138My main concern is the transmission and engine. The car is priced fairly low ($1000.00) and I would be interested in a light project to get her up and running good. Would be nice to have a small diesel SUV in the household.
I have searched to see what other common issues occur with these cars and saw posts regarding the windows, which doesn't seem to be a huge deal. If I were to go visit the car and check it out, are there any things I should keep an eye out?
Timing Belt status is unknown and coming from the diesel work, it would be a top priority to get done anyways.
Thanks!
Welcome! to answer your question-
Known issues include but are not limited to:
-soot loading from EGR causes problems in factory stock motors, limiting engine life and causing excess wear to rockers and turbo.
-solutions include software mods to delete EGR, hardware mods, or improved filtration to lower soot load.
-Head bolts appear to have clamping force issues. Solution: ARP head studs.
-Factory t-stats fail rapidly and are expensive to replace. Solution: aftermarket custom Tstat housing, or inline t-stat.
-Alternators have a finite life span.
-Transmission torque converters can be troublesome.
-Various electrical components wearing out, as one would expect from a 10 year old car.
