Thanks for updating us. This is in my future as I've had hard 2-3 shifts for over a year. Keep us posted in the future good or bad.

Thanks.

That is great news because I just put one in from a 2009 Dodge with 44K miles to fix my binding 2-3 and sometimes 3-4 shift. I used the 5.7L Hemi torque converter that came with it too.

For anyone interested, this transmission was only $330 plus $150 shipping to MN from a salvage yard in NY. These are pretty reasonable versus a reman or rebuild.

Probably will try it this weekend once I get the everything re-assembled from replacing the cracked head with one from the VM Specialist.

Question along these lines:

Does anyone have the #s for the 3 filters inside the transmission? 2 of the 3 are usually replaced, but I suspect from recent behavior of my transmission (description follows) that the 3rd and frequently not replaced filter may be completely clogged.

Behavior:
On start, the trans has to "build pressure" to be able to shift. This is either due to a bad check valve near the TC or the 3rd filter that is frequently overlooked in filter changes. Lately, my trans has been throwing a code (DNR exact code, but translates to "see trans specialist") and will go to 3rd gear for driving from a stop. I can manually override the 3rd gear start by manually selecting 1st, 2nd.

My first suspicion is the 2nd filter in the trans pan area. My second is the check valve. I do get some trans shudder on 5th gear acceleration, but nothing overwhelming.

Since I do not have a transmission jack, not the funds to procure one, I'm hoping the filter will clear this up. Last trans service was Jan 2013, 25K miles ago. It is due for a service. However, I came from the Jan '13 service still with the "slow to build pressure" issue before & after.

You are gonna have to explain where this third filter is. I only know of two. The screen attached to the valve body and the canister threaded up into the case.

This is the common drainback problem.
I think it is caused by a bad check valve in the transmission pump.
Try adding more ATF+4. That usually helps with most transmission problems.

This is an odd problem. You might actually have to go to a transmission shop to find out what exactly is going on.
Do 4th and 5th gears shift ok?
My guess would be the transmission range sensor/switch or a faulty solenoid.
A good transmission shop would have the tools to do a proper diagnosis.

edit: its possible that you got a bad set of filters and that is the cause of you problems

Thanks a bunch! That sound very much like what may be occurring.

It sounds as though you are in limp-in mode.

See around 4:30 of the following Chrysler tech video for the 45RFE.
