So what was the cause of the pad falling off?
The only way I can think of this happening is if the caliper came loose or the brake pad backing metal plate broke.
I would also guess the caliper not going back in was because without a pad in place, applying the brakes would push it out of the socket.

I guess because the caliper was seized? The piston would not compress back in.

The piston would not have come out if the pad was in place.
That had to have happened after the pad was gone.

All I know is that I didn't make it out of my driveway. From the moment I put it in drive (after sitting for 3 days) I heard the weirdest noise, put it in reverse back into my spot and saw the brake pad. When I did my brakes I did the passenger side first, then when I went to the driver side I realized it was seized.

Jeep is running well and haven't heard the noise again since I bent the heat shield away from the rotor.
On a side note, my buddy said they just had a 2007 Jeep Liberty in for a rear seized driver side caliper.
