Well the TC finly stopped locking up - unfortunately I am not in a financial place to replace with a suncoast or a hemi TC myself. Any way can you copy the program and have it re-flashed after the TC is replaced?

If you buy an MPPS cable on ebay you can extract the stock tune and save it as a .BIN file on your PC. It can then be used to flash the file back. In fact, if you go over to the DIY Flash thread in the CRD tech section I believe they have the stock tune files posted there for both the 05 and 06 CRDs. The tunes are year specific and not VIN specific, so a 2006 typically uses the "808" tune. You just need to verify which tune you have with the MPPS cable and software.

Since it sounds like you have the Pre-F37 tune, I would suggest that you make sure the ones in the DIY thread are also pre-F37. They may not be. Otherwise just pull your own tune from the jeep.

Once you pull your pre-f37 tune and save it, share it with the rest of us for evaluation.

I think the f37 flash mostly effects the TCM, not the ECM. But I'm not exactly sure.
Either way, folks who mess with the ECM tunes would like to see a pre f37 tune and compare to the post f37 tune.

Just thought of this...

If the dealer flashes your ECU with the latest version, it may require you to convert to the new 5 volt glow plugs.
Just something to be aware of and ask the dealer about.

In my opinion, you shouldn't be forced to pay for the glow plug conversion when all you are really trying to do is fix your transmission.

The driver comes with the cable (in a CD). A software to read/write the ECM will also come with the cable (in a CD).

the pre F37 tune have much power at higher rpm in the first 3 gear for what I have see , but is only the ECU limiter and not influence the shifting point like a TCM reflash

I was under the impression that F37 put the neutered code in the TCM and the ECM was not touched. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

To my knowledge the f37 is the engine tune. It limits torque when the tc is locked. If it wasn't the ECU then gde's full torque ecotune and hot tune wouldn't fix the issue.

Ancient history "F37 DEC 06 Recall - Torque Converter & Reprogram ECM/TCM - also referred to as TSB 18-023-06" see also Sir Sam's NOOB guide. The original factory tuned CRD produced enough torque to almost immediately destroy the very early 05 torque converter (had a plastic part) and to stress the later 05/06 TC (not 07+Euro). DCJs "solution" (too cheap to do TC recall) was to detune the ECU to reduce engine power and retune the TCM to raise the shift points and to "inspect" the TC but only replace the TC if it should signs of damage (ex. shudder). GDE EcoTune and basic TCM tune returned ECU power (+ other things) to somewhat better than stock and put the shift points back to closer to where they were (+other things) all compatible with OEM 05/06 TC (not the early model 05 TC).

In some case, my 05 for example, the DCJ tech did the ECU detune but "forgot" to do the TCM retune. This will show on the Jeep Owners site as there are no outstanding recalls (e.g. F-37 has been done) BUT you still have the pre-F-37 TCM shift points (e.g. final shift/lockup is ca. 58mph not the post-F-37 ca. 63mph).

Further to what papa pointed out there were also a batch of pre-F37 06's produced that had the later TC installed and came from the factory with the raised shift points already installed in the TCM. When F37 came out this batch only required the ECM to be updated with the power management.

So going back to the original question. If the vehicle is one of the original ones with the very early TC you've done well to get it this far. The MPPS cable will NOT allow you to save and restore the original shift points to the TCM. You will, however, be able to undo the power management part which is stored in the ECM.

I would simply instruct the dealer to swap the TC, do a quick learn on the transmission and under no circumstances touch the module programming. Better still, take it to an indie transmission shop and have them do the work. You can guarantee the modules won't be touched and you'll probably pay less as well.

IIRC there were only 2 torque converters used for the automatic transmission in the 05 and 06 KJ CRD production 1) very early 05 trash one with the plastic part that self destructed very early (I doubt any are still on the road with the original TC) and 2) slightly later 05 and all 06 production. The "Euro" was an 07 and later production TC (what 05 and 06 should have had from day 1).

I don't know for sure but it's likely some later year 06 production KJ CRDs (say after Nov 06) came from the factory with some portion of the F-37 already done. To have a good opinion on this I would have to have copy of the F-37 documentation which I do not have.

This is great information - thank you all for posting - This is an early 05 ( ordered in feb and took delivery in May 05)

Unfortunately - financially I have no choice but the recall process right now - I will see if the service manager would spare the TCM - but ..... They just follow the book nowadays.

I agree with "Boss" a lot has changed over the years.

Yes - It is the F37 recall - they swap out the TC - inspect pump - replace if needed - and flash the ecm tcm- this retards the timing and adjusts the shift points- it was a big deal when it first rolled out in 06 - law suit conversations etc - I put a master lock over my odbii port to ensure no one ever messed with it.
Got 135k out of her, the TC would shudder now and then - not engage right away when put in gear - it even stalled the engine a couple times going into gear. But worked and the fluid was still in good shape.

All that to keep my extra 15 ft lbs of torque
The availability of aftermarket flashes were none at that time. Since most jumped on a free torque converter - most were flashed.

Be prepared to fight them hard if you've ignored the recall notices and expect to free TC out of them now especially since the wording was to inspect and replace if required.

On the off chance they do agree to fix it on their dime there's zero chance that you're going to drive out of there with your original programming.
