It's really a hit or miss I think with these crd's. I currently have 3 of these. (Hi, I'm josh and I'm a crd'aholic)

Knock on wood, My daily Crd I love and really haven't had any problems with. 1 of them I'm currently doing new head gasket, rockers, arps, tb kit. And the other Id like to beat with a baseball bat.

If the crd bug ever leaves me, I'll prolly go to a tdi for my commuter and then either a 12 valve cummins or 7.3 p-stroke has my tow pig/4x4 rig.

Just brainstorming. Have you looked at a Subaru Outback or even the rare baja they made. They might fit what your need with definitely more dealer support

Coming from the owner of two 4th gen Legacy's, and knowing several people with WRX's and Outbacks, I wouldnt touch one unless it was either the 3.0L 6 cylinder or one of the newer motors. I had little faith in the 2.5L and they got dog crap for gas mileage. My buddy has spend over 2k chasing down a misfire on his bone stock 90k mile 2013 WRX to the point where they did the leak down test, timing belt, replaced plugs and coils, and the ENTIRE ECU wiring harness and its still misfiring. I dont know if this is a reflection on the subaru dealer or the car itself but its impressive.

My Legacy GT got low 20's, with 24-25 highway being the absolute best it would do. My wifes Legacy 2.5i would average like 25 on a good day. The highest we EVER saw was 29mpg on an all highway trip. For such a small, low profile car and only like 3200 lbs, it really sucked.

People give me crap all the time for bad mouthing subarus, but I just found them to be underwhelming other than having AWD in a compact car.

That said, the Legacy GT wagon with 5 speed will always be on my Bucket list. I cant help it.

I guess I didn't realize their issues and also the lower mpg's. But the latter isn't really a surprise to me

I think if the legacy and outbacks could just disconnect the AWD, or be 2wd, whatever. Then it would be a great vehicle and have much better MPGs.

I cannot thank you guys enough! Posting on this forum is helping immensely with my search for the right second vehicle. I still haven't made up my mind 100%. Im keeping my options open as far as a particular vehicle to search for. I think that my best bet right now may be to find a CRD with part or all of the "problem pieces" fixed at a reasonable price. I used to drive a Blazer that I had done quite a lot of work to. However, earlier this year I let my sister borrow it, an oil line popped out of the oil cooler, she kept driving, bye bye blazer.

Agree with last post. I have two crd s. Also two older tdi s
. Commute in the TDI. 40 mpg. Nice ride. Use the crd in the winter. I pull a 6k boat with my crd s. In my opinion not a reliable commuter. I lived in white marsh for 16 years and know the wx. I used my crd on a construction site for three years. Serious mud, did great. I would not buy one as my only vehicle as a long term commute vehicle. Gotta be handy with a wrench and have the hobby time.
