CAT 1R-0749 Fuel filter. How much life?

Looking at adding the thread adapter, and running these big (2 micron?) filters. Anyone have reports on how long they will last, and do you have any CEL's for the missing plug, or?
Oh, and when I look at one online it said 1 micron, maybe that was just that particular manufacturer? It wasn't cat, but said it replaced the CAT 1R-0749.

Thanks for spreading the word. A $17 filter that is bigger and filters much better sounds like a winner, maybe the large capacity will stretch this 2 micron long enough to make it reasonable, and not require a double filter set up?

might PM CatCRD - I don't think too many people got them to work

several folks looked at those to fix an air-in fuel problem - while the real problem was a leaking filter head - you add the more restrictive 2 micron filter and it made it worse.

also if you messed up the install you could kill injectors.

The Racor filter was a more reliable 2 micron install - better fuel head that cured air leaks.

With any 2 micron or duel filter setup a lift pump is required... :wink:

well -the lift pump is at least highly recommended

if the vacuum system is tight - it will work without a pump

- the Racor is really good - because it changes the head and that's normally what leaks

also for the Cat conversion - when Greg made the adapters in 07

- we thought a lift pump would cause problems for the injector pump - so no one had a lift pump

- but some folks ran the 2 micron Cat without a problem - but the system had to be tight.

Just to get real #s out there 10 micron (standard OEM/WIX/NAPA filter) = 0.000394" which is sufficient for Talcum Powder / Level to Remove Haze from Liquid / Fertilizer (10 - 1,000 microns) / Mold Spores (10 - 30 microns) vs 2 micron = 0.000079" which is sufficient for Cigarette Smoke & Bacteria (Cocci) = 2 microns.

As long as one is using good fuel not stored too long and/or a standard fuel treatment to prevent algae I don't see that a 2 micron filter is worth it (I've run lots of miles on Dodge Cummins and KJ CRD with OEM filter and no issues) although I can see the benefit of a clear filter bowl to keep an eye on what's going on. If one wants to run a 2 micron filter as long as the filter is clean you don't really need a lift pump but keep in mind that a 2 micron filter can clog earlier at which point you either need to change the filter early or force fuel thru with a lift pump which sort of defeats the purpose of a finer filter.

Now if I was running lots of bio, especially home brew, I might have a different opinion.

hmm, that's a lot for my tired self to chew on. Thanks for the insight!
I do have a cheap inline lift pump, so maybe it's worth a shot, but I'll have to reread the stuff WWdiesel posted about injector erosion and the particle size. The article(s) had a recommended filter size, and that's what I was thinking I'd go with as I'd like my injectors and engine to last half a million. I will most likely run the CRD until the engine is toast, and then rebuild it, unless the chassis falls apart first, but it's so dry here in S Idaho that rust isn't much of a problem at all.

Since Greg made the adapters, I've been running the Cat 2 Micron filter with the in-tank lift pump for 100k miles and not had one issue. I installed pump around 35k, now at 135k. I was running the Cat Filter w/o the pump and had some air in fuel issues, but with the lift pump, never had the air issues again. Still on the original fuel head with no leaks at the heater connector. Knock on wood - never had an issue with this setup. I change the filter once a year before winter time since the water in fuel drain is gone so if I have water from the previous year, its out of the filter before the freezing temps of winter come.

I don't think there are any of the adapters left for our filter heads, but you could try something like this guy did:
