Noticed there's a lot of CRD's in the sale section. What gives? Any insight. I don't have any intention of getting rid of my mine anytime soon. I don't think....
Have the jeeps just reached the age that people are looking for a new/er vehicle, or are they unloading them before potential problems? I couldn't be happier with mine.

I think it's both of what you mentioned. Also there are the ones where people have no clue on the maintence required and the tb breaks and trashes rockers, then they get an assinide high quote from the stealer ship to fix so then they just let them sit and eventually sell them just to get rid of them.

And don't say you like yours so loud. It might hear you and change that. lol

Not just that I also notice a lot of new members on the forum in the last 18 months who have recently purchased and trying to solve the maintenance nightmares they have unwittingly bought into. When we never hear from them again I suspect there might be a lot of shattered dreams and quick turnarounds as they realise this isn't the vehicle for them.

They are a very unique vehicle that was unfortunately only sold for two years in this country. They are not good vehicles for the faint of heart person who cannot perform their own repairs, maintenance, modifications etc... :wink:
Most of us on this forum have a love hate relationship with the CRD Jeep as we love the power, torque, and great fuel mileage, but hate the quirky problems that arise from time to time with the various issues we are forced to deal with. :banghead:

So far I only like the engine and simple layout. I bought my CRD last spring and have been chasing troubles ever since. I already changed the timing belt and water pump. Now I have leaks from the Trans cooler and lines. Leaks on the oil dipstick connection. An abs light from a wheel speed sensor I can't figure out. Front axle seal leak and needs new front axle mounts cuz the rubber isolators are shot. But hey! It's a Jeep thing!! 8-)

well i agree with you guys it is one of a kind jeep ….. got it 2 years ago with 100 miles put in 5000 in parts so far , looks nice , waiting on shipment from id pars (MORE PARTS) is ok i have 04 jetta tdi 5 speed all original look like new drive like new, so I'm thinking to keep this jeep just like a toy in my garage hope one day ill drive it just like on sunday if it doesn't rain , definitely not a daily vehicle,,

This vehicle is one of the best I've ever owned.

With 3 head gasket failures on 2 separate and considering another recent purchase of a non functioning CRD, I would say that these vehicles have a hold on me. I have had 6 transmissions replaced under warranty.

The ARP studs solved the HG leak issues and the latest replacement transmission from Chrysler solved the shutter. The jeep has since given me 45,000 super happy miles and I don't fear Murphy's law by saying it either. It has proven to have become pretty robust.

Besides the 2 problems I mentioned above, here are the other maintenance issues i've had to deal with.

1. Motor mount rattle
2. Fuel head air leak.
3. A glowing ABS light on dash, due to the speed sensor wire.
4. Original ceramic glow plug and relay replaced.
5. Interior fan switch.
6. 3 timing belts and related parts.
7. 2 sets of CAC hoses.

I believe that the engine will last for hundreds of thousands of miles more if maintained properly, same as other diesel engines do and clean fluids are the key to keeping it in top shape.

In the USA today, no other 4WD diesel vehicle is available as inexpensive as this CRD is to maintain. Other diesel SUV such as Audi, Mercedes, BMW and VW diesels, repairs costs are almost double what ours are if not more. Replacing it with a new one will be close to $50 thousand or more.

I look at it in this way, we own an inexpensive 2.8L Intercooled Turbo Diesel SUV that needs to be maintained in order for it to run well. And maintenance is nothing new to vehicle ownership, maintenance is part of ownership.

Timing belts, ARP studs, steel glow plugs and a robust torque converter are the major repairs that need to be considered prior to buying a CRD. Include these upgrades and repairs in the upfront costs before buying the vehicle.

Doing the work yourself is a plus and scheduled fluid changes are a must.

Sure it takes some cash to bring the vehicles up to snuff, but think of the vehicle you will have when you do.

It drives like an Italian sports car with big coglioni and the speed and torque puts a smile on my face.

You are aware of the reports of cracked heads and blocks occurring in the late 100k's, right?

If the people of the 1970's and 1980's had to deal with the same crap I'm having to deal with now, then the USA has every right to despise diesels.

Maintenance is changing the oil, filters, brake rotors, and dampers as required. Not valve train repair, cracked head replacement, or transmission replacement before hitting 120K.

Anyways, all that to say that this is hands down, the worst car I have ever owned in my life. No joke, my 1967 Mustang was more reliable than this Italian POS.

I've put a lot of money in upgrades as well as a brand new factory crate engine.

And I have more upgrades to invest in.

And in less than 50,000 miles it will be do for another timing belt.

These things are ridiculously time consuming and expensive to maintain.

I'm longing to go back to a GM 6.5 diesel. For $3000 in up grades they can be made very dependable and efficient and after That they only need $500 worth of injectors every 100,000 miles.

Does anybody want a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD with 20,000 mils or so on a brand new engine?

Owning a CRD requires you to be a good mechanic, capable of doing thorough reseach before rushing into diagnosis and repair.

That said, I am more concerned about all the CRD owners that are not active on this forum.
Do they know what they are doing?
Have they not had any problems?

There are at least two CRDs that I see often driving around in my local area and neither of their owners are active on this forum.
One of them, a red limited, appears to be bone stock.
The other one, a silver limited with red pinstripes, looks like it has a lift and has a sticker on the tailgate indicating a GDE tune. It would seem that this guy/gal knows what they are doing. They are also completely oblivious to the crazy guy in the black CRD (Me) waving at them from the next lane over :P

I've had several small problems, but my one big expensive repair was the cracked cylinder head.
I could have sold it or traded it in, but fixing it was more cost effective.
Its a lot of fun to drive.

What about those CRD owners that still have less than 100,000 miles on theirs?
Do they not like driving it?
Thats just crazy :P

I bought mine with 20k about 2 years ago and then spent 15 months deployed. Its at almost 36K now. I plan to keep this one as long as possible. Part of the issue is that I have yet to find a vehicle that can replace it.

I don't see anything cost effective about these things. Having to do the expensive timing belt every 70,000 miles is enough to make me want to ditch it right there. Already we only have 50,000 more miles to go. If I ever quit working on it enough to drive it, that's only a year and 1/2

Not to mention all the other bull that needs to be kept up on these. This is by far the most expensive vehicle per mile that I have ever owned. And the best we have ever done for fuel mileage is 25 mpg. If I sunk half of what I have in this POS, into a 6.5 diesel or Cummins I could get that kind of fuel mileage in a full size comfortable vehicle that won't rust out like these tin cans.

guys this it is , once you get hooked with this jeep you are done no mater how you look at it , we love it, its a jeep thing, don't get me wrong i love playing with it like i said its just a toy but parts are killing us. so expensive, anyways , today I've seen on the road a nice DODGE pick up 4X4 12 valve 5.9 cummins from 98 99 model in super shape , I'm going to dream about that truck tonight.

I am glad I got out of mine, but is was addicting and lots of fun. I just could not justify the extreme costs, the lack of reliability, and the poor parts availability. I wanted an expedition style vehicle that was serviceable, and this one did not live up the the promise of a diesel 4x4. The question for me was, what to replace it with?

I eventually decided that for my needs, I would have to have something custom built / modified. So far, the custom road has been filled with lots of obstacles, and required plenty of cash and patience. When it is over, it is likely I will still have spent less than what I would have if I had bought a JK Rubicon with a lift and off-road goodies. I will have the diesel goodness and real Jeep capability, but without the myriad of issues and lack of reliability my CRD had.

I am hoping that with the right mods, (new turbo, EGR delete, GDE tuned, ARP's, and a few other things that this thing will see 400k miles). I'll be taking the top off of one with 250k this week, and I'm curious if there's any noticeable wear, I doubt it. But, who knows about the mains and rods...

Yeah, but the truth is you haven't really got over it or else you wouldn't still be here hanging out with the boyz :JEEPIN:. You need to get over it, move away and stay away. This is a very toxic environment for you at the moment :grim:
