I installed a few things at once (the new 4J/1G Thermostat, a Fan-shroud mod, and a New HD fan clutch & 11-bladed fan), since I'd have the hoses out of the way and things pulled.

The prep, tools, and parts:


Pulled the turbo-box and some of the hoses to open up the space:


Got the old OEM Thermostat housing ALMOST ready to be pulled:


Pulled the rest of the hoses, and the OEM Thermostat housing (nice view of the open spot):




Cleaned the old Thermostat gasket gunk and bolted on the new 4J/1G Thermostat assembly:


Started the Fan-Shoud Mod by using my Dremel tool to cut the Fan Shoud while it was still bolted in (at mid-point on each side):




Pulled both pieces of the Fan Shroud out, brought them inside, bolted on some window latches (kind of like these: http://www.hardwarestore.com/brass-window-latch-and-keeper-615708.aspx), and connected the Fan Shroud pieces:








Pulled the old OEM fan & fan-clutch and installed the lower section of the Fan Shroud mod:






Put together the new 11-bladed fan with the Hayden HD fan clutch, and installed that dynamic duo:


Bolted-on and latched-together the upper Fan Shroud over the new duo:






Finished the Thermostat install, put all the hoses back together, and buttoned it all up!:




I filled my KJ back up with coolant, refrigerant, and tested everything. Bled out any remaining air, topped it off, and test-drove the beast.

Everything ran better.

I towed my 19 foot Travel Trailer (4k lbs) to the mountains and had no problems with over heating or power!

Silver bullet, I wanted to modify the fan shroud for ease of future access to that area. There have been posts on Lostjeeps.com in the past about the Fan Shroud mod, but I couldn't locate any pictures to assist in the process and so I figured I would try it out and post the pictures accordingly.

As far as the why I keep the MAF sensor plugged in, I have the GDE eco tune (and the Weeks kit 1 & 2 EGR delete kits in place), and so I don't believe that it matters anymore (plugged in or not). I keep it plugged in so looks better for the smog check upcoming next month.

This is a great set of photos... as you obviously know, a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, these photos are probably worth 100,000 words.

Did you have any trouble installing the Model 001? Several of your photos show it bolted to the engine, but there is no bolt threaded into the tab on the Model 001 housing that ties it to the steel bracket off of the viscous heater. I have a couple of questions regarding this...

1) Did the threaded hole in the aluminum tab line up properly with the steel bracket on the viscous heater? I see by one of the last photos you got the bolt threaded on, but I am just wondering of you had any trouble.

2) Did the 6mm hex key tool I provide with every Model 001 prove useful?

Hey Jeff,

I didn't have any problems installing the Model 001 thermostat housing assembly, and I waited on connecting the bracket bolt until I had torqued down the other three bolts first. Then I screwed down the bracket bolt without any problems.

1.) The threaded hole in the aluminium tab lined up tight, but just fine on the steel bracket. No problems at all, I just didn't take a photo of that step.

2.) The 6mm hex key tool you provided was perfect, and made the job that much easier (thank you for that). My torque wrench did just fine using it, gentle and consistent torquing. The only tricky part was removing the 6mm kex tool tip after torquing, as it kind of stuck in place. I just wiggled it free until it came out.

Very happy with everything.

I also installed your thermostat (2nd Gen with the ports for coolant probes) and it went very well, thanks to the provided 5mm Alan). I ran into a small issue while replacing the thermostat (I put a 190 stant) and I'll let you know on an email. Nothing to worry the customers though. Very nice unit! I'll post some pics when I'm done with the whole work, I planned to replace the turbo, but the play is less than the new unit I have, so I didn't replace it. I replaced the ckp and I'll have to recheck the timing, add warmer pads for oil and trans, replace the trans fluid and add probe in the pan. So it will take a bit as I'm not in a rush, the crd is now my 2nd driver vehicle.

Will the 11 blade fan bolt up to the Hayden clutch or does it need the gm clutch

On the Hayden HD Fan Clutch I got, the bolts lined up just fine, and when screwed down tight it is solid ... but the center hole in the 11 bladed fan was slightly smaller than the posting seat on the circular center of the fan clutch. I don't think it mattered that much since it was torqued down tight onto the fan, and the 1/4 inch extra width it created didn't cause any fitting problems between the intercooler area and the engine.

If anyone else has any concerns or recommendations for improvement for a fix, let us all know!

The GM clutch fits the fan opening perfect using the part numbers below:

The OEM 11 blade gaser fan hole is slightly smaller and does not fit the clutch perfectly. Best to use the GM parts...

How has this installation worked for you? I've got a fairly new Hayden clutch and I'd like to avoid having to buy the GM clutch.

So far this set-up (The Hayden HD Fan Clutch + the 11 bladed fan) has been great. There have been no problems at all with the gap-seating nor the fan distance.

I drove 4 & 1/2 hours up to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to enjoy a snowy weekend in a cabin with my 2 kids, my wife, and some friends, and my Jeep & Yakima box was packed full. The entire time I climbed from sea level to 7000ft+ elevation, my temp gauge never moved off the exact midline.

I will be towing my 19' 4000lb travel trailer up the mountain in May to go camping with friends and family, so I'll be able to give it a truer test then.

I'll let you know how that goes.

Yep! And I believe that the real reason the temp has been so consistent and responsive is due to the 4J Thermostat & Assembly, not really the fan and fan-clutch. I will keep you posted as well Jeff when I pull the Travel Trailer up the mountain and back in May.
