So once in a while my jeep will stall at an intersection, it feels exactly as if it would in a manual if you don't let the clutch out. Everything goes fine until you get to near a crawl, the vehicle jumps ahead and RPMs drop and if your foot's on the brakes the engine will stall. This makes me think my transmission lock is kicking in at low speed, and that's bad, right? Can I do anything about this? Also only seems to do it when it's cold, and even then only sometimes. Didn't find much in the way of this happening to others, but has anyone experienced this?

It's the transmission drain back issue. Very common.
Check the fluid level. If full, add another half a quart.
When cold, let it idle in N for a min before putting in gear.

If it it feels like transmission issue then try adding a quart of ATF4 in the transmission. This transmission likes to be overfilled.

Thanks,
Jigar

Thanks guys, I know the transmission doesn't really "connect" when it's cold either, I was told this is the drainback issue as well. My transmission holds perfectly at the "ideal" level, but if overfilling it a little fixes this I'll try that as the stalling feels very hard on the engine.

Tranny drain back induced stall usually only happens in first 200 yds after 8+ hrs cold crank up. Try tranny service and or a bit more atf+4. Sounds like tranny is not going into neutral as it should. CRD tranny is a common DCJ one that any good tranny shop can diagnose and service

Usually the stalling issue when stopping or slowing down is caused by issues with some of the plungers in the transmission front pump housing being worn out and sticking. The front pump and housing assembly will have to be replaced to permanently fix problem. It is a know issue with these transmissions.
If you choose to replace the front pump assembly, I would strongly recommend replacing the torque converter with a hemi or Suncoast unit and adding a Transgo kit while doing the repair... :|
Any good transmission shop can perform all of the above repairs....
