I changed the oil yesterday in the Libby. Used the filter from idparts and Rotella t6 5w-40. I got about 6.5 quarts out using a 7 quart catch can. I put 6 quarts back in, thinking i'd check and then top off the remainder. But when I checked it was well over the full mark on the stick, almost the same as the distance between low and full over the full mark. I haven't changed the oil in a while and the last one was free from the dealer because they screwed up.

I have a couple gallons of Mobil TDT. I have a fumoto installed, but not sure if I want to try to drain a quart-ish and then top off. And I am wondering if the stick is off since I know how much I got out and how much I put in.

How much oil did you put into the new filter before screwing it on?

6 qts is good.
Start it up and let it run for a few min. Then check the level again.
Most CRD dipsticks are not marked accurately.

I just wet the gasket and installed dry. The blue crd if I used the M1 it was 7 quarts even and the stick would say a little high so i used 6.5. I drove around the block, but its still a little above full. I will track it now. I have only changed the oil 3 times now on the red crd and the first two were dealer. I got the jeep in 2013 buts its only had 16000 miles added up to now.

I experimented a bit today using a 24oz jug and a hose on the fumoto. My oil stick must be nearly horizontal. I marked the pic where the level was with 6 quarts even in it and marked where it is with 24oz less. A very big difference, so we will run with 5.5 quarts for now since that got me to the low level.

The 2.8L CRD engine is meant to run with 6.4 quarts of oil if you run a standard filter. Napa 1516.

You can run 7.0 quarts of oil with an oversized filter. Napa 1515.

Do NOT run 5.5 quarts of oil in that engine, you're asking for a top end failure very quickly.

You have been warned.

Guess I had a brain fart. All the threads I have seen have warned that the stick is wrong and if you fill using it the oil will be overfilled. Forgot that even though that is the case I know how much I put in, so its likely not overfilled.

I have no opinion on oil dipstick accuracy but I am 100% positive dipstick level is very sensitive to slope vehicle is parked on (same for coolant tank level) as I have checked this in my gently sloped driveway and a bit sensitive to drain down time due to small oil passages. So use either 6.4 or 7.0 qts as fill amount fot small/stock filter vs large filter. Drive a bit to fill the filter, park on level, wait 10 min, check level on stick and mark full fill line for your vehicle.

PS if full fill is different from stock you can also figure out where low oil line should be based on distance between stock full fill and stock low fill and mark you dipstick accordingly.

I use a WIX 51515XP. Before swapping from the 51516XP to the 51515XP, I cut the base from both filters to measure the volume of each filter. The 51516XP holds 15 ounces and the 51515XP holds 26 ounces. Based on the increased filter volume of 11 ounces, I fill the CRD with 6.75 quarts of Mobil 1 TDT oil.

As an FYI, the 51516XP element has 33 pleats and the 51515XP element has 41 pleats.

THIS. The .25 quarts is really a non-issue as most is consumed by blow-by regardless.

NAPA Gold (Only) is made by Wix, and the only difference other than decorations is the 5 in front of the Wix part # versus the lack thereof on the NAPA Gold.
