So today I pulled out of a driveway with the Jeep a little cold. I realized there was a car coming and I was slipping on some snow, so I hit the accelerator a little hard to pick up speed. It wasn't WOT though. The Jeep grumbled a little bit and the CEL came on. I felt no loss of power and there was no smoke out the back, but it was a little louder than normal and more base than I'm used to coming from the engine.

I pulled codes with a scanner, and I've got P0108, and P0105. I didn't notice any performance problems all the way home, and I stopped after a mile to check under the hood and look for any problems. I see nothing amiss. I had to drive another 40 miles home, and everything was okay.

After the Jeep cooled down, I turned it back on, and I hear what sounds like a little bearing noise. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine on the passenger side. I'm obviously thinking turbo, but in that area it seems normal.

I did a search, and every thread seems to link the P0108 and P0105 code to the turbo. My plan is to check the center shaft for movement tomorrow, but I need to go to work in the morning.

Does anyone have any advice? Can I drive the Jeep in the short term? Is there anything I should be looking for? I'm at 161K miles, and I'm on the original turbo. I replaced the solenoid for the turbo last year after some advice from GDE, but I can't even remember what code I had that prompted it.

Both those codes indicate a problem with the MAP sensor.

Thanks flash. I've never had a problem with my MAP before, but it's been awhile since I've cleaned it. I'll check it tomorrow. Since my GDE tunes it's been pretty clean.

Do I need to worry about causing harm to my engine or turbo if I drive it around with the MAP sensor messed up? It will be short term.

Other than the limp mode and reduced power, the engine should drive just fine.

Thanks again Flash. So far I don't think I've had a limp mode. I'm not sure what the bearing noise is, but it isn't too loud. I don't think I'll wait too long for my next timing belt. The dealership didn't replace any of my pulleys under the timing cover at 100k, and I've had a squeak for at least two years. It's not the alternator, so I think it must be one of the serp or timing belt pulleys.

Simple test, remove the serpentine belt and start engine and see if noise goes away. If it does, noise is one of the pulleys or items being driven by the serpentine belt, alternator, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, etc...
If noise stays, most likely one of the bearings on the cam pulleys is going bad. (If one of the cam pulleys, I would recommend repair ASAP, failure of one of these pulleys could get VERY EXPENSIVE!!!)

Thanks wwdiesel. I'll try that tonight. The check engine light was off today, but the Jeep is clearly low on power. It's not in limp mode, but it's not exactly accelerating like it did last week. The bearing noise seemed louder this morning in the cold too. It wasn't as noticeable once I got to work.

There is no smoke coming out the back that I notice. I do seem to smell more exhaust though. There's a strong smell of something that isn't diesel. I guess it could be any number of thinks simply dripping on the exhaust. I don't have low fluids, but I do have small leaks in several places. No antifreeze yet though. I'm leaking power steering, trains, and oil from three places at the moment.

Could a cracked inter cooler cause the low power and MAP sensor to trip under very heavy acceleration? That's coated in oil near the bottom driver's side. It's been leaking for years.

You'd get a p0299 underboost code.
The oily coating could be from a transmission cooler leak.
