Lots of cars have had fuel pumps close to the engine. Over the history of automobiles, probably more have had it than not. If you fix the fuel line fitting leak, I see no reason why an external pump would be any less reliable. It certainly would be more serviceable. I will concede that an in tank pump will last longer, as fuel keeps it cooler via thermal mass, but they are expensive. I picked up an airtex diesel fuel pump that produced the same output as the airtex tank model. Cost? $30. I doubt I will ever go through enough pumps to exceed the $200 cost of an in-tank.
But then again, my diesel is randomly stalling.
