He guys, this is my first post, been lurking around a long while now
But thought I'd best say hello!!
I have a 2005 Cherokee (Liberty) 2.8 crd and live in castleford in England!
I've had it around 6 months now and thanks to the excellent library of info on here
I've sorted most of the problems/common faults but this one has me beat!!

I have a squeak coming from the rear pinion not a grind or whine it sounds like a bird tweeting
And is in time with the prop turning, I dropped the prop off and spun the wheels
And the squeak was there, what could this be?? I have a couple of chipped spider gears
And some nice new dino oil in there but it's still squeaking.
It does it worse in reverse than forward if that's any help..

Thanks for any help

Jamie

Chipped spider gears are not a good sign.
There are several bearings and thrust washers in there. Could be any one of them.
If the spider gears are damaged, maybe the squeak is coming from the diff carrier?

Yeah, I was hoping that wouldn't be it, not too clever with duffs!! Not had
Too much to do with them, when I spun it with the diff cover off it sounded more towards the pinion side than the carrier
But I could be wrong!!
There is a fault on the wranglers with squeaky seals and I was hoping I might be that but I'm not sure how to check??

I guess it could be the pinion seal.
Is it leaking?

Maybe you could spray some lube in between the yoke and seal to see if the squeak goes away.

Sounds like a good excuse for a DTT or locker

I have one that has a good portion of a spider snapped off, and it ran silently (I parted that jeep), but I wouldn't want to wait for it to blow up on the freeway. I would fix it asap for safety and reliability. If it blows up or seizes, it could cause a crash, however unlikely. Chrysler recalled 280,000 Rams because of a similar danger with the pinion nut coming loose.

Had a long drive out in it today and noticed it only squeaks under load???
Had a feel around the pinion and it's not hot to the touch...
I'll pull it apart shortly and try to get to the bottom of it!

While I think on, when I was checking the noise I noticed that the wheels are really stiff to turn
It has a slippy diff ( both wh held rotate in the same direction) so I'm wondering if this is
All connected!!

Yes, its supposed to be a limited slip diff.
Why the wheels are so hard to turn by hand, I dont know. But I noticed the same thing.

That makes me feel better!! Could it be because I didn't add slip additive???
