A while ago I posted because my fiances CRD shutdown on the highway and wouldn't start. I took it to a dealership after a guru double checked that it wasn't a timing belt/rocker issue. As I don't have any experience with this motor their $700 diagnosis fee was that it needed a new block/engine. The body seems to be in relatively good condition (except a wasp nest in the door jam since it's been sitting so long). Does anybody have any advise on what to do with this thing? Ideally I'd be able to find somebody in the Jeep/crd community that could find a new engine and get this back on the road and I'd hate to take it to the scrap yard and only get a few hundred out of it. It's located in northern Virginia if anybody knows anybody looking for a broke Jeep. Here are some pictures of the vehicle and the dealers diagnosis

You may want to give me a call or send me an email. I am not sure who you took it to, because that sheet looks suspiciously like the diagnostics from a dealership type of establishment. You can't do a leak test on the cylinders, with any degree of accuracy, when you don't have the camshafts installed.

The way this Engine is designed, if the timing slips, then the rockers would be damaged. That is the design, to sacrifice the rockers and protect the rest of the motor. Having a "popping sound from the intake" certainly indicates that rockers were damaged or that the timing was not correct. However, air moving through the cylinders also makes noises when the valves open. Anyone who is unfamiliar with the specific sounds of this engine, might not recognize whether that was a normal sound or not.

I'm not saying that your engine didn't have a valve drop, but at this point, you only know a little bit more then you knew before. It would be worth the time and effort to remove the cylinder head entirely and have a look at the top of the pistons. If they aren't damaged and impacted, then the engine can be rebuilt.

As it happens, I will be driving up to New York City in the next week or so, I will be up there this coming weekend. I already have two other CRDs to stop and work on on the way back, yours could be number three. Hit the button down below this post that says email, and send me a message. Let's see if we can get your CRD at least properly diagnosed.

Have geordi look at it while he is in the area. If the timing and valve cover are off it should be fairly easy to see if a valve went bye bye. Either way I would pull the head to also inspect the Pistons. Which shouldn't take Jim long to do

As it turns out, I had actually stopped by this CRD back in 2014 after this happened, and at the time the request / thought was that the timing had slipped and they wanted me to potentially replace the rockers. This was before I was really doing as many top ends as I have been recently, but I pulled it down to the timing belt and discovered that it was basically bang-on perfectly in time.

The decision was made at the time to stop, I remember that the battery was completely dead and I couldn't attempt to start it or do anything much further without a delay that hadn't been planned for (the schedule wasn't flexible enough) and so with the thought that it was maybe an electrical issue, I moved on and hadn't heard anything about it until now.

I have suggested that they look at the parts in the back (why do SO MANY dealerships give back a vehicle with half the engine in the cargo area?) and see if the injector tips show any signs of damage, and then look at the valve stems to see if any of those look a little funny / different. Both things will be illuminating about conditions inside the cylinders without needing to actually remove anything, and then they can make the decision about using a borescope or pulling the head off. If there are stems that are taller, or impacted injector tips however... That pretty much ends the conversation.

So I stopped by tonight and took a few pictures which have been updated in the album below. I thought I had my camera in the trunk but I was mistaken so I apologize in advance for the cellphone quality. Am I correct in thinking it's not torn down enough to see the injector tips/valve stems? This is the first time I've opened the hood since we brought it home. If it didn't need a new timing belt it does now since the old one is in the back seat...

I don't know... I see nothing terrible in those shots, there are a few broken lifters but none of the valve stems appear to be broken or "up" from any other. That is a good thing.

Did you look at the injectors to see if there was any obvious damage on them? If anything catastrophic happened in the cylinders, it would be shown on the very tip - there would be marks of impacts.

It really depends where your thought process is - Selling a non-running vehicle is a tough spot, the price won't be high, and this would be a total gamble right now. The opposite side of that is how much to pay for building it back up, is probably about 2 to 3 times what you might sell it for right now, and then the resale value from KBB hasn't been great, between 6-8k depending on mileage and overall condition once it is running.

Yeah I can't tell anything obvious about the valves from the pics. How do the injectors look?

I'm sure he'd appreciate that Larry, you probably drive within 10 minutes of that CRD every day. It's in Leesburg.
