Thermostat

Long time owner and occasional lurker here. A few months ago when I was searching for a replacement thermostat housing for my CRD. I stumbled across a thread here by a guy, can't remember his handle, that modded his original housing by cutting it in half and welded a custom machined flange ring to each half allowing it to accept an off the shelf thermostat and be fastened back together with screws. The guy had even posted a set of plans - genius!

I bookmarked the link intending to come back to it later. Well, the time has arrived. Just clicked on my bookmark viewtopic.php?f=5&t=83945 and it takes me to a login page. Assuming this has been re-classified as member only content I joined up. Now when I click the link I get the message "You are not authorized to read this forum." wtf!

I've got a housing ready to mod and some free time. Any ideas what happened to this thread?

Word of warning, I few members as well as I ended up with a cracked head gasket from fitting an inline tstat. Flash in the referenced thread had a cracked head as well? Correct me if I am wrong?

OTOH if you can fit it into the factory housing and keep the bypass going properly you should not have any problems with cracked heads.

The thread you are talking about was deleted for some reason but all the information is still available for those who request it.

Simply slipping a inline thermostat into the upper radiator hose is no longer recommend.

There are many ways to modify the factory thermostat housing to make it function better.
Or you can buy the HDS thermostat.
Or you can just use a factory replacement.

Why did this cause a cracked head? Was it reaching too hot a temperature? More out of curiosity than anything.

Not exactly sure but there have been too many cracked heads for it to be a coincidence.
The theory is:
When combining a failed factory thermostat, either failed open or opening too early, with a inline thermostat, there is a temperature point where the outlet to the radiator and the bypass are both fully closed and there is not enough coolant flowing out of the head. This would create temporary hot spots in the head.
The hottest spots in the head are around the exhaust valves.

This is the Do it Yourself Serviceable Thermostat posted in the Liberty CRD Page on Facebook, It was created by Mitch Juenemann and Free for the download. Give these plans along with your non working original factory thermostat to a local machine shop and they will build the new unit for you. That's it ... that's all you need to do besides pay for the new thermostat housing when it's completed. They may also procure and install the thermostat in the new housing if you want, ask them.

Search for a qualified metal machine shop in your area, a metal machine shop capable of fabricating / shaping aluminum parts.

It creates hot spots caused by improper bypass. Supposedly the tstat on the block being partially open aggravates it.

All I know is that I am done doing this experiment on $1800 cylinder heads.

I installed one HDS tstat in my Libby and gained 2 MPG, I have another one on order for the other Libby when TDF gets it out the door.

I also have that hot, burn you hand, type of heat coming out of the vents.

Thanks to the half dozen of you that PMed me with offers to send the plans. Great to see the spirit of sharing and helping each other is alive and well. It's real sad to see yet another forum where the site owners don't approve of diy modding :banghead:

Anyway, modded my old housing this afternoon using Mitch's design. For the cost of a couple of hours work, a few bucks worth of aluminum bar, fasteners I had lying around the shop and a $13 thermostat I now have a 203 degree thermostat in my CRD. Wow, that was cheap and easy :BANANA:

Most importantly, thanks to Mitch for making this :idea:

freely available and taking the time to properly document it :rockon:
