Exhaust rattle? Mine had a slight rattle until I tighten the t clamp but it's back again. When off I went under the car and hit the exhaust around. It was preducing a "clonk" noise when hitting the dump pump in certain spots. Its back now so in a couple of weeks going to strip that side of the car and install new gaskets v clamps etc

I removed the intake and found a roller had come out of a follower on #4 exhaust. Upon inspection of the rest I found 3 others that I could slide the pins out. I am going to replace all of followers and install a new head gasket and a set of studs. I plan to use this vehicle to pull my side-by-side around the country and need it to be dependable.

If you were taking the head off to replace the gasket, use a two hole gasket, and be sure to replace all of the valves as well. When you are putting the gasket on coat both sides and the deck and head with copper coat.

Are you saying ALL the valves now? I thought it was only the exhaust valves that we are concerned about failing? Intake valves generally run so cool that they never have breakage issues!
And, do you have any new news on the metallurgy tests; any updates???

Strictly speaking, you are correct - the intake valves should not be an issue. I cannot say for certain whether I have seen any intake valve failures (some were affected but may have been collateral damage) and we are only talking about the difference of $150.

As far as the testing, everyone will know the instant that I know anything - I'm certainly not going to hold out on anyone with this, it benefits all of us. To get the most information however, it may take until the spring when a larger collection of tests can be run with more experienced people and equipment. Rather than risk "using up" the examples I have at the moment, I have elected to wait until they can throw everything they have at it.

Who has broken an intake valve? Was it from an exhaust valve breaking prior?

Also, not to toot my own horn but it ended up being rockers. Glad you were able to find the problem op

Thanks much Geordi, we all await with bated breath the results of the tests in order to make informed and sound decisions on what is best; pull the head and replace all the exhaust valves, or simply just replace head bolts with studs & replace all rockers.... :juggle:
This is not an easy or simple decision currently!

don't know his name , but remember reading it somebody posted that engine dropped intake valve , do know if was italian VM or VM poland , supplier , but definitely new lifters from VM made in poland look different , so why did they update lifter and rocker and did they update valves? i guess we will find out soon , as for diagnoses you are the winer ! cheers,

Whether or not the new-in-box valves have been updated / changed, is one of the things I am eagerly waiting to hear about from the testing. According to multiple sources (IDparts being one) there is already quite a lot of precedent for this as you have noticed - the lifters are indeed a new design and the rocker is not 100% identical either. No change to the part number was made, so this is a "silent change" that VM has done and just put the new parts out there. Another silent update I know of is the piston, the rings are different on the new style and not compatible with the old pistons.

IDparts said that VM has a habit of making changes and not telling anyone with new part numbers, so it is anyones' guess at this point if they have changed the composition of the valves from string cheese to something a bit more durable.
