Hello All,

I have an 05 CRD Ltd, and ive always had issues with cold starts. Anything under 40 deg F, she has a hard time starting up. The colder it gets the worse it is, i know its a diesel thing, but wasnt sure how much trouble was "normal". I do plug her in if i know its going to be 30 or below, and when its 10F or below i still have issues starting up, even when shes plugged in. Is this a problem with my engine block heater? Does this engine even have glow plugs?? Not sure, i know my dodge did and there was a delay you had to wait before startup, etc. I do still wait a few seconds before firing her up and it doesnt seem to work...

Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys!!

It does have glow plugs. The factory units were 7V ceramic tipped and were later replaced by 5V metal tipped because of durability issues. You can tell the difference because the 7V plugs have a white insulating band on the end where the wiring plugs on, and the 5V have red insulating band. If there was an issue with the glow plugs you would likely get check engine light.

The other issue could be your fuel system. When its cold the fuel gets thicker and is harder for the injector pump to pull through the fuel lines and filter head. Its also possible you are pulling air into the fuel lines. Try bleeding the filter head of air and see if that helps. A lift pump in the fuel tank is the best solution as it will pressurize the fuel and push it to the pump so you dont need to worry about the air.
