 Post subject: crd exhaust question

looking at the diagram for the exhaust on my 2006 crd it doesn't seem to match up to the one in my jeep. the diagram shows an exhaust flange with s3 nuts holding the exhaust to the manifold. mine has a d-clamp around it.
I have seen the pipe referred to as the turbo down pipe. I am contemplating replacing the crankshaft position sensor and want to make sure I don't disconnect the wrong thing. I have also seen reference to loosing a v clamp, not sure what that is or if it's the same as a d-clamp.
"loosen the v-clamp and move the turbo down pipe to one side to get access to the cps"
how do you move the pipe to get more room? do you have to replace any exhaust gaskets?

The V clamp holds the downpipe to the turbo.
There is no gasket between the downpipe and turbo.

Turbo has 4 nuts that bolt it to the exhaust manifold. There is a gasket there. But you wont have to remove the turbo to get to the CPS.

Not sure what you mean by D clamp. Further downstream there might be a D clamp. Like somewhere back at the muffler maybe.

Maybe you can post a picture of your turbo/downpipe attachment.

there is definitely a d-type hose clamp just hack of the turbo. you can see it dead center of the pic

I've seen that diagram as well, and it's nothing like my Jeep's setup. I'm guessing they may have reused a diagram from the 2002-2004 export KJ's turbo/exhaust/EGR setup or something. If anyone's curious, I found some pictures of the older setup here.

It looks like this. (note that particular part isn't listed as being compatible with the 2.8L, just a picture I found)

There's a woven flexpipe section below the passenger side of the dashboard/footwell, which allows the downpipe to move. Just remove it from the turbo and move it away from the engine/toward the fender to make more room around the sensor.

That has nothing to do with the exhaust; that's for the coolant. But you may want to drain the cooling system and remove the coolant reservoir to make more room to work.

The v-clamp holds the exhaust downpipe to the back of the turbo.

Ahh, I see now.
You have to look past the coolant hose, way underneath the coolant tank.

Yes, IT IS a V-band clamp.
Exactly what is supposed the be there.

Thank god too, cause I was afraid you had some crazy weird setup going on.

Its called a V-band clamp because the inside clamping surface is in the shape of a V.

BTW, you can unbolt the coolant tank from the firewall and keep all its hoses attached. This will make it easier to get to the V-band clamp.

If you work from underneath the vehicle, you can change the CPS without removing anything else in the engine compartment other than the heat shield covering the CPS & it's connector. I did drop the skid pan out from under the engine before starting!
I changed mine this way and it is not a bad job, only took about 30 minutes. There is room to access the CPS WITHOUT dropping the exhaust pipe!!!!

I am a firm believer of not removing anything you do not have to as it may cause other problems, leaks, etc...and is just extra unnecessary work!!! :wink:

does removing the engine skid plate give you more room? I see no way for my arm to get up in the way it is.

Dropping it does give you a little better access to the CPS area...
Note: I did have my front tires up on drive on ramps to gain access from underneath....
