Looks like maf is ok. I just changed the oil, which seems to have reduced the smoke substantially. Nearly a full bucket 10l came out.
Say for instance the previous owner ran the engine for around 400km, with cylinder 1 not firing, could the oil have been contaminated with diesel, them pushing past the rings?

I still have to clean the map and take it for a drive, but it's looking pretty good now

Depends on why that cylinder wasn't firing.
If the injector was not opening or not spraying in any fuel, then no.
If the injector was stuck open and constantly spraying fuel, then YES. But that would have symptoms of lots of black exhaust smoke

10L is waaay too much for that engine. Are you sure some of that wasn't water?
And if any of that was fuel, you would have been able to smell it.

i think the smoke that you see at tail pipe is because previous owner overfilled with extra oil ? like Flash said injector sticking issue will make black smoke also rattling noise and it will not make 400 mile trip , actually it will try to run backwards , and will bend con rod LOL.

Smoke has cleared, must have been some bad diesel left in the tank. It had half a tank when I bought it. I filled it to the top and added fuel conditioner / injector cleaner and all seems well now.

Still a few things to address but I'll be sorting them out in the future.

I have a few questions about tuning now, I have the cable and software, but I'll start another thread.

Thanks guys.
