Just bought myself a 2005 Liberty with the 2.8 crd. Been wanting one for a while and finally found one. 2005 with 170,000 KILOMETERS. Doesn't run, got it for 1500 Canadian.
Guy said he was driving down the road and it just stopped. Says there's fuel at the injectors and thinks it's an electronic problem. I will be getting it towed to my house this evening. Will start by clearing computer and pulling codes then double check fuel and pressure. Then the fun begins. I will post which codes come up soon as I know. Any other info or starting points you knowledgable people have for me? Thanks in advance!

Will add pictures when I figure out how haha.

First thing I would check is timing belt.

I just called and asked the guy and he says he had the timing belt and "everything internal" changed around 160,000Kilometers (100,000 miles)
I will ask him a bit more tonight when I go to pick it up.

Spin motor over with starter and listen if you hear any bad noises!
If you hear bad noises, problem is internal and you should not try to start engine risking doing further damage.

Make sure all sensors are connected good and tight!
If no bad noises, pump up fuel head good and tight and try to start.
If engine still does not start, DTC's will tell us areas you need to start looking for problem.

Report back,

See if it can turn over by hand gently. If it's all smooth and happy then that's great news. Codes first is a good plan though. Fuel pressure is usually not an issue, but codes will hopefully point us in the right direction

I already cranked it last night when I went to look at it and it cranked fine and sounded clean. I will go over it a little when I get home tonight and report any finding.

It sounds like you got a good deal, even with the no run situation.

Are you located in Canada? If so, approximately where?

if its not starting while cranking, change out the CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR.....they are afflicted with heat issues and fail often

Yes in Canada. BC Vancouver island to be precise.

So first findings #1 is the owner replace the ECM and did not have the computer reprogrammed for the Jeep so some of these codes are possibly from that. Here are the codes that came up
P0047
P0670
P1251
P2295
P0091
P0489
P0562
P1189
P2141

I primed the pump and got it so that fuel comes out, tried cranking, cranks fine no fire. After letting it sit for a few mins I try to re prime and a little bit of air comes out so I'm thinking there may be a leak in the system? Should I just bite the bullet and buy a lift pump? Also he never had the keys reprogrammed to the ECM either so I know that needs doing but the Jeep should still fire and die after 30 seconds, at least I'm pretty sure that's how it works. I do have access to a programmer to program keys but not sure about reprogramming the ECM. Can I do that with the MPPS software?? Or do I have to tow it to Chrysler to get that done...

Also, noticed the ASD fuse in the fuse panel was blown, I didn't have a replacement to swap out and see if that was a problem. I'm hoping it may be something so simple haha.

When cranking the engine the tachometer does not move at all which is also possibly pointing to the crankshaft sensor?

What do you smart people make of all this information. It's alot for me to take in.

I have some pictures to load but don't know how, do I have to host them or can I upload them? Got some random plugs unplugged and don't know where they go. On by the air intake, and one right by the alternator.

X2. Forget what the previous owner stated....he likely just wanted it gone.

No timing belt....no camshafts turning....no valves opening.....no combustion.

the dealer is gonna be expensive and the factory tune is not best option anyhow.

I have the GDE eco tune, have a while and it's been awesome. If you want to save money, I believe that there are tunes you can get free and program the ecu yourself with the right tool. Somebody else can chime in on that I'm sure and point you in right direction, or look thru here and the tech section, you'll find the info. The search function on this site is not the greatest I'm afraid.

Many folks swear by the lift pump, I (knock on wood) have never had a issue pre or post th enew redesigned fuel head. Check to make sure you have the new fuels head first is my advice, then if you don't, put one in and see if it will hold prime.

Ummm..yeah change the bad fuse.

Other than checking and confirming you have a new timing belt visually, I also suggest you check and make sure you aren't running the org ceramic plugs. They will eventually break and when they do they may or may not take out something mechanical with them, not worth not spending the hundred bucks or so.

Somebody may suggest the elephant hose mode, if you do be aware that it can freeze in winter and do damage. A provent is a better call. More important IMHO is a GDE style tune and to not overfill the oil, the dipstick is marked wrong and filling to the full mark overfills them, the excess oil gets in the intercooler etc. 6.4 qts

I got the Jeep running the problem was the ASD fuse I replaced it this morning I got it to fire now I need to deal with the PCM that is currently in there it was pulled out from another vehicle and it is not programmed to the correct Vin is there any way I can do this without having to pull it to the dealer as I can get it to fire but it dies in 15 seconds because the keys are not programmed to the vehicle I do have the correct stuff to program the keys as I am a locksmith but I do not have the stuff to program the VIN into the computer or I need to figure out how to get the VIN from that computer so I can get the skim coad from Chrysler....

Or call GDE.

Personally i would do the second, simply because the first is a steep learning curve and..time

But if broke, then time I would make and learning I would do

The DIY tuning does not allow for reprogramming the VIN in the ECM.
GDE can do it.
Dealer should be able to do it.

What happened to the original ECM?

Jpd686 is it the ECM/ECU unit that came out of another vehicle (located on the side of the engine bay behind the battery and roughly above the left front wheel? If so only someone with factory or factory equivalent OBD tool can correctly program that unit to your vehicle and your vehicle's features (cruise/no cruise, CRD vs gasser, automatic vs manual tranny; VIN; etc).

As for the keys as I understand it once programmed to a specific vehicle, presumably using VIN, it's impossible to reprogram them to another vehicle. I suspect but don't know for sure if the keys you have "belong" to this vehicle that once you get the ECM programmed with the correct VIN then the system will recognize those keys as valid. GDE would know for sure or someone else on the forum that's more into KJ-CRD electronics than me.

Original owner said he threw away the old computer.... Already tried that haha. Dealer will reprogram vin for 120 + 60 to do the keys. Will probably just tow it to them rather than ship the pcm to gde as it will probably take a while since I'm on West coast Canada. then once running I will tune myself with the MPPS thing. Yes that is the computer one, right behind the battery. No idea what the heck it came out of and the old owner has not responded yet. Super happy to hear it firing though and even if I sink 1000 into it at the dealer I'm only in on this thing for around 2500$CAD.

tow?? it takes 5 mins to take out and just bring it to them..would be less, of course you won't have immediate satisfaction

The dealer is actually reasonable

Well they said it needs to be towed cause they need the vehicle. I asked if they could do it with just the pcm they said no. I'll call and double check but they did say no haha.

I suspect because they lack the ability to hook directly up to the ECM but have to use the OBD port under the steering column.

If the keys came with the vehicle I still "think" they should be recognized by the ECM once it's reprogrammed and as noted if the keys are already programmed they cannot be reprogrammed but this is not my area of expertise.

If they reflash the eprom it's more likely it will reset the skim part as well. It's been a few years and some memory lost from the strokes, but the CDJ systems have 3 components, and all 3 need to be present when keys are programmed. I believe it's PCM, ECM, and the SKIM module in the column. If any of those have been changed they need to have the VIN written in by the factory tool.
That resets everything, including the vehicle security PIN# but they will be able to communicate with each other. Hopefully that's the same code the keys are programmed with, or they will need to be replaced since they cannot be re-programmed to a different VIN code.
