Yep, for the price of a fully equipped CRD Libby with all the mods already freshly done, you can buy a new engine with 2/3 the power and an extra 100lbs!

If I were spending that kind of money, I'd go for the VM Motori A-428.

Upgraded Head with cams mounted to the top of the head. Valves are different, but no details of how.
Upgraded Intake manifold / valve cover made of molded plastic that the EGR gasses and particulate can't stick to.
Upgraded turbo
Upgraded water pump / thermostat
Completely revamped coolant flow. (water from radiator enters the block at the bottom left side, pump located roughly where the AC compressor is on the R-428)
Fuel rail pressures increase from 1600bar to 1800bar
Piezo type injectors (may not be such a good thing in the US)
Multiple Injections per combustion cycle controlled to 230 microsecond intervals

Increased torque, hp, and efficiency over modified R-428s even with the EGR.

The specs on this motor are virtually identical to the stock VM with it being detuned for constant torque from 1500 to 3000 rpm's. This can easily be retuned for huge gains. Being a Cummins and having a chain driven cam you can expect unprecedented reliability for many hundreds of thousands of miles. As for the cost... you get what you pay for. Just my 2 cents worth.

Any amount of $$$$ is worth not having a timing belt.

Can't argue with that. Point taken.

I've been following it hoping to do a small truck build. It wasn't an official answer, but somewhere someone dug up a $7500 price tag.

Is that ready to go or just the long block?

It looks to be a wastegated turbo, not a VNT, I bet it's tiny to be able to spool quickly.

Cummins R2.8 product page wrote:
The engine comes dressed with a power steering pump, 120 amp alternator, camshaft-driven vacuum pump, grid heater, and engine-mounted passive diesel oxidation catalyst. In addition to the engine itself, the kit also includes many major components necessary for engine operation, including a universal wiring harness, engine control module, accelerator pedal, OBD port, and a digital J1939 data display.

I previously thought it had a gear-driven camshaft, but yeah, now that they have a brochure about it, I see it does have a chain. Judging by the location of the high pressure fuel pump, I wonder if the chain is in the rear of the engine?

CUMMINS is a big name just as MAN is big in Europe , so these guys never put questionable parts in their engines

I guess the question becomes...
What transmissions will bolt up to it?
Will any kind of electronic transmission controller work with it?

There are 2 shows featuring this engine in Dirt Everyday magazine of the Motor Trend channel on YouTube.

It seems to be tuned for high torque down low, and in usage that requires that, it pretty much dominates anything else of common use, out of the water. The figures I read, depending on application, are $10k-$12k installed, adapted, and finished on the road.
4BT is a more durable engine, but it weighs about 300lbs more.

My tandem axle work truck has a Cummins. Over 5 million on it. (1991 model L9000 Ford , Eaton Fuller tranny and diff and axle locks), TWIN turbo

I think they've done rings, water pump and several alternators. They are run hot and hard all day long and run on dino oil .

Never an issue. I can haul 18 plus tonnes and it BUILDS POWER as it gets going. 1200lbs of torque.

Would love a Cummins jeep.

I was told that Cummins has adapter plates for installing onto the 545 RFE trans. An older 4.0L gas Grand Cherokee Limited would be my first choice for a donor vehicle. Or any Jeep before Fiat ruined them...

I spoke with Cummins about this at Overland Expo. Their answer was that the engine dimensions were available to adapter manufacturers and that by the time that they had the engine ready for sale adapters should also be available for any of the likely recipient vehicles and transmissions. They suggested talking to Advance Adapters. FWIW, at the show the engine was in a black TJ and in a resto-mod scout.

IIRC, the number they were throwing around ( though not a final number ) was about $8500 for the motor and all the electronics you need to make it work. That would not include an adapter, or any of the CAC stuff, so there would still be a fair amount of work and cost to get one installed.

It also sounded like a metal oil pan might be an option, since Dirt Every Day cracked theirs on a rock when playing with the motor in Tube Sock.

I love my CRD, but I have to say that the thought of a TJ Unlimited Rubicon with one of these and a 6 speed sounds like my ultimate vehicle. All I need is a winning lottery ticket.

Cummins 2.8 Re-Power Update 9/25/2017

Greetings Fellow Enthusiasts,

I’m Steve Sanders, Program Leader for Cummins Repower™ – the new crate engine business of Cummins Inc. which is bringing the R2.8 Turbo Diesel to market.

I’ve personally communicated with many of you on this distribution list over the past few years while we were crafting this program. We share the same passion and addiction for unique, reliable, and most importantly - fun personal transportation. I couldn’t be more excited to announce that the start of sales is finally here!

We have worked feverishly since our announcement at the SEMA Show in 2016 to ensure that our first crate engine we bring to market doesn’t disappoint. To show our appreciation for each of you who have eagerly and patiently been awaiting this day, we wanted to give you all an exclusive heads-up and first chance to buy before our press release goes on the afternoon of September 29.

We are limiting quantities for 2017 to 500 engines so if you urgently need an engine, be ready to act quickly on Friday, September 29 at 9 a.m. Eastern at http://www.CumminsRepower.com. The only way to buy a Cummins R2.8 Turbo Diesel will be through our website so be sure to secure yours as early as possible!

You’re not just getting an engine. Our team is made up of Enthusiasts just like you so we know how disappointing it can be to open a new box of toys only to find out that you have to do homework and order more parts to make it work. We are essentially providing everything you need to start your engine with the exception of a battery, cooling package, and of course, diesel fuel!

Our kit (PN 5467046) also includes:

Complete front-end accessory drive (Alternator, Power Steering Pump, Fan Hub, Serpentine Belt)
Cam-Driven Vacuum Pump
Remote Fuel Filter/Water Separator
Remote Oil Filter
Mass Airflow Sensor and Housing
Engine Wiring Harness and Engine Control Module
Starter

Flywheel
Universal Vehicle Wiring Harness
Throttle Pedal
J1939 CAN Dash Display
Owner’s Manual
Installation Guide
Cummins Quick Serve Online Access
Emissions Testing Information

I look forward to following each of your Cummins Repowers, hearing your impressions of our new crate engine, and telling us what you want us to do next! If you aren’t quite ready or we sell out, don’t worry - we’re ramping up supply as we speak for 2018!

Very Respectfully,

Steve Sanders
Program Leader – Cummins Repower™
