The problem with collecting data is that the sampling is relatively small.

Fwiw, I changed the timing belt and water pump plus tensioner and pulleys at about 98k, then again around 115k, when I also did rocker replacement and discovered the tensioner was way out of sign (more than likely my mistake when I did the job first time). My rockers were also perfectly fine.

I also inspected the timing belt when I replaced the cp3 pump since the bearing was starting to make noises.

Plan is to do another timing belt when I get around 180k. Currently I'm at about 140k and knock on wood, no issues. I have had gde tune from about 110k.

Took it apart to find a bad head. But of the school of while I'm in there I might as well. No valve failure. TB, rockers and arp @ 170k. Now @ 180k or so... not quite sure as i broke a wheel speed sensor while doing the ball joints and have yet to replace it.

thermorex, i agree small samples are not reliable. my hope is that successful rocker and arp jobs are much higher in number than subsequent valve failures. My purpose with this project was to find out how many successful rocker and head bolt replacements have been done, (as opposed to just the failures) and how well the changes are tolerated by the valve train (in terms of miles driven without major failure). i think 2 of the reported valve failures reported in the other thread were a few hundred miles after rocker job. This last fact was alarming, and several forum members posted exactly what i was thinking ... maybe i shouldn't change the rockers!!!

After opening my valve cover today, i see two collapsed exhaust rockers. The camshaft lobes above these deformed rockers seemed a little rough on the primary contact surface, and cut on the shoulders. The rockers were cut on the side of the roller too. It crossed my mind that it looked like there had never been contact on the cam lobe surface on these failed rockers. Were these rockers installed collapsed and defective from the beginning?

The rocker and lobe cutting seem like activity that could cause lateral force, wobble, and vibration on the valve stem for thousands of miles. Does this damage and weaken the stem?

My instincts tell me to get a valve job. but I'm not even sure where to begin with that. I'll be researching that tonight.

hi wwdiesel,

I'm working on delegating update permissions on that spreadsheet. Try now. if you update, please follow the same data formats so we can maybe write some reports and formulas later if it takes hold...

Bingo! Worked like a charm. I simply added some "no"'s to my data for a test!
I like the idea of collecting as much data as possible, that way you can pull the pertinent data to another blind sheet and then build some statistical data charts! :D
Charts can sometimes be a real eye opener!!!

my 2005 head has what appears to be a "born on" date stamped just to the rear of the #1 glow plug on the head.

Wow. Alot in this thread. I replaced the wife's TB etc at 175k. I don't really count for the valves because I replaced my head as well mostly because the original head was damaged. The original valves needed to be done for sure. At least the exhaust valves. New rockers installed and now has 180k.

I'll fill in what I forgot and what I know off the top of my head. Arp install yes I just forgot to mention that. Year is 2005 limited. Rockers replaced along with everything else with new style. Head was not cracked but was damaged enough from a broken off glow plug that I tried to extract that I wasn't cool with using it. The machine shop repaired it but it's my wife's jeep and I wanted no issues after I screwed that one up. Intake valves were fine but exhaust valves were concaved pretty bad. Previously had run Mobil 1 oil in it but switched to shaeffer 5w40 diesel oil since all the new parts. I'll have to look at engine manufacture date etc when I'm not at work.

Have you? (just copy the option that fits and paste in your post, or make your own):

1. replaced TB, Rockers, ARP without subsequent valve failure
- mileage when work done:
- current mileage:

yes..replace the TB(2nd time, first time for the rest of the timing belt parts. idlers and such)
rockers yes...but not because the failed..until after I did the belt,,then I lost 2..
APR done because I was there..and might be loosing coolant..head not pulled. head gasket not replaced
mileage: 150K miles or so
current mileage 155K

hoping to go another 100k without issue...
SEGR since 59K miles. no tune..just bypass EGR
