I have a 2005 liberty crd with 134k. Timing belt slipped and bent 3 valves, broke half a dozen rockers, and cracked the head into the main oil galley where the lifter rides. I bought it a year ago for 10k. I've been putting together a parts list and pricing everything out. Looking at spending around 4K with the new head, gasket set, rockers/lifters, and timing set. Which is a lot of money for a 10k rig. So looking for a good used head to save some money or I'm just going to part it out. Any advice or a path on a head less then 1800$ would be appreciated! Thanks for your time

It sounds a lot more like the valve failure was the first failure that took out everything else in turn - these don't break the valves if you just screw the timing, but that belt was also WAY beyond the service life of 6 years if it was still original.

The VM Specialist http://www.vmdieselspecialist.com/ can sell you a head for probably about $400 - take the opportunity to also source a 2-hole head gasket from them since you will be waiting on the shipment anyway, and then get new valves, ARP studs, and rockers from IDparts (the rockers VMspecialist sells may be used) as well as new glow plugs and a new timing kit. You should get all the parts for around $2k

VM specialist also sells pistons and sleeves and rings if you (probably) need that as well. Plan on pulling the block for this.

Thanks for the advice! The cylinder walls look undamaged and you can see the factory hone markings. Is there something else I should be looking for?

If the pistons aren't munched from dropping the valves, then that is great news. Do you still have the broken valves? Can you take them (and the unbroken valves) out of the head and mail them to someone? ONLY the valves themselves (stems and heads or single piece) are needed, you keep the springs and locks etc.

We are having metallurgical testing done and they have requested more exemplars if they are available. You don't have to clean them or do anything else other than triple-bag them in ziplocks so the oil doesn't eat through the box - then send them priority mail for about $7.

Please email me (button below) if you can assist with this, and I will send you the address. Thanks!
