Started jeep with ac on, fan came on about 15 seconds later!
Not sure of speed, but it sounds like high to me.
Did this twice, did same thing both times!

I started the jeep and turned on ac. No fan, Pulled relay as suggested and fan came on at low speed.....

Put it all back together.

Not sure if it is good or bad. Ran to get fuel and it runs great. Did not try the ac as my wife took it.

I would really like to know definitively what it should be doing.

Though for now I'm quite happy with it. Now the outside temps have been in the low 70s so the engine is cool.

The ASD when energized supplies control voltage to both of the LOW and HIGH speed relays according to the FSM.
Both relays are controlled by the PCM which to the best I can figure out without a logic diagram of the PCM, looks at the following inputs to determine which relay to energize.

    1. AC clutch coil status
    2. AC high side pressure switch status
    3. Engine coolant temperature
    4. Transmission temperature

All of the above can and will activate the electric cooling fan depending on input from these items.

Now if anyone has a logic diagram of the PCM, please share, I would love to see it!!!

Yea I know, but one can wish!
One (logic block control diagram) would answer so many riddles we all have trouble trying to figure out exactly how the engineers at DCJ programed certain things to function and under what circumstances or conditions...
Logic block diagrams were so very common and basic in the control world from which I was familiar with! I have drew many of them myself!

Yeah. There are days I'm sorely tempted to wax nostalgic about the bygone era of flowchart troubleshooting.

If / thens for Yes or No. Sometimes an 'else' thrown in...

The FSM kinda does that, but there's usually no indication of how the value is established or what it means, which is why most Dealer mechanics just hook up the scan tool, and start replacing the parts the book tells them to until they get to one that solves the problem. (maybe..hopefully)

Ah, but if we knew what was supposed to happen and when (setpoints) and under what circumstances, troubleshooting would be so easy!
The FSM does divulge some minor logic on some things, but there are many control parameters performed by the on board computers that are simply not revealed! :banghead:
Case in point is the electric cooling fan control logic on the diesel model! We know some things energize it in either low or high speed, but exactly what, when, and at what setpoint are obscure.

Well good news. When warmed up and the ac on the electric fan runs.............. I feel like celebrating. I changed the fuel filter this past weekend so I think everything is as it should be. All the Noob suggestions are complete. The check engine light is on since the MAF sensor is unplugged. It runs really well. My wife is even impressed with it.

Thanks for everyones help. I am very dismayed at the dealers inability to fix this. Especially when they billed the previous owner, a girl, thousands and fixed nothing.

I am certain I will have more questions in the future.....

Good job ...now you're a bonafide CRD fuel filter changer and if you stick with it long enough you'll inadvertently become a certified diesel mechanic.

And probably become divorced as well.

You will learn, LOST is your best friend and advisor on matters of importance concerning the Jeep CRD!
Most dealers do not have a frickin clue about these vehicles unfortunately!
There are some really good and knowledgeable experts on LOST when you may be in need of advice!
Most have been there done that at one time or another!

Don't be too dismayed about the Dealership ignorance situation. You will become accustomed to it soon enough.

So after months of good running a new problem has arose............... The ETC light has come on. I took the hose off and verified the butterfly valve is open. Put the hose back on and after driving a bit it came on again. I read that this can be unhooked with no problems so I did. The problem is under load like on a hill accelerating it feels like it is hesitating. I have gone thru all the Noob guide suggestions. Could the ETC somehow be affecting it? I have changed the fuel and air filters. Also put diesel treatment in the tank as its been very cold here.

Thanks for the help,
Randy

ETC = electronic throttle control

I've never experienced this problem but some have reported this issue when using throttle and brake at the same time.

The accelerator pedal is 100% electronic. A loose connection or other electrical issue would cause the ETC light to come on.

Have you scanned for codes?

I thought that light was for the butterfly valve in the intake manifold???

I got an ALTEL scanner recommended on this sight but I cannot get it to talk to the jeep... Quite disappointed in that.

The butterfly valve in the intake is the FCV, flow control valve. While it looks like a throttle, it doesn't serve as one (at least not for controlling engine speed like a throttle on a gas engine). It closes part way to help suck in exhaust from the EGR system, and it closes when you turn the key off to reduce shudder at engine shutdown.

The ETC light can indicate a problem with the pedal, though some people have had it come on due to low voltage (failed alternator). If the light's on there should be a code; see if you can pull anything with a code reader. Try the Altel/Autel/whatever again ... not sure what you've got, but I've used an Autel MD802 on a CRD before and it worked fine. Or maybe you'll have better luck with a different code reader.

So I checked the grounds and looked for a bare wire and found no problems there.
I ordered a new accelerator pedal from IDparts. Does the wire harness plug in to this or does it come with wires and a plug?
