Hi jeepers,

the transmission of my 3.7l Liberty with 100k miles on it stopped working fine. This happend:

# whirring sound like steering pump (at this moment i thought it was the pump)
# few minutes later no forward power, slipping clutch and so on...
# engine control light -> P0700 -> DRBIII: P0870, P0733, P1790, P0734,P0218, P0944, P0732.
# Temp of AT by DRBIII: -19°C (TRS Transmission Range Sensor is ordered)
# Trans only N

Soundfile of whirring sound: https://workupload.com/file/N5Bxjwv

Transmission oil was burned (black and smelled), drove on a mountain offroad trail as the sh** happend -> no clutch pieces/scoring found in the oil,

Image

transmission flushed complete until now, old filter installed (new one is ordered), a second oil cooler installed -> http://www.jeep4fun.at/jeepforum/viewto ... =6&t=42987 .

Cleared the DTC´s, drove about 45mins fine -> then the the same problems happend again. Engine control light, slipping gear only N anymore....

Event data: Trans temp -19°C, ambient temp sensor 134° (not defined if Celsius or Fahrenheit)

Image

Tried a few miles to drive to come down from highway and called the towing service. Immediatly controlled the trans oil -> smelled fine, definitley not burned the second time.

What could it be?

:?: :?: :?: Do I demand too much of my jeep :?: :?: :?:

bye,
samse

If transmission oil got hot enough to turn black that means there was some terrible slippage going on in the transmission and the oil got EXTREMELY HOT. Clutches and / or bands are now probably toast, hard burnt up and brittle and will require replacing. :grim:
Sorry ol chap, sounds like you are in need of a transmission overhaul or replace the whole unit with a newer one from the scrapyard...

And yes for low speed trail use, you definitely need an auxiliary transmission cooler to help keep everything cool!

Roger so far.... but how can it be, to drive after flushing the trans and erasing the DTC´s another 45mins without any symptoms and DTC´s? If the clutches were burned -> no driving should be available?

On the towing truck i also drove by my own -> this truck like:

Image

No slipping was noticeable....

samse

When you said like a steering pump, I was preparing myself for the sound of a pump sucking air.
!!!!!!!!!!Not that!!!!!!!!!
What I heard was the sound of a pump trying to swallow it's self.
That's either cavitation or metal to metal IMO.

A very very badly plugged filter can do this (the big flat one, not the spin-on)
also the filter screen could have broken a chunk off, and the pump is trying to eat it, but not very likely.

Edit:
I have encountered similar symptoms as you describe, In vehicles with auto trans, that have been way too much without service.
The filter stops all the aluminum, steel, clutch material, etc and eventually becomes plugged. no forward, no reverse, nothing.
Shut the engine off and it sits for a few hours, the material stuck to the filter settles down to the area below the filter media.
Engine starts, transmission works again. Drives some miles until all the material is again sucked up into the filter media, and plugs it again.
If this happens to you, do full service. Then next oil change, do full trans service again.
This is because of these things that pass filter also settles inside the torque converter, gear sets, accumulators, etc.
Only hope of recovering transmission life is changing out the old fluid, and the new filter media catching what still remains, then changing that out as well.
But if this happens to you, remember that this transmission is damaged, and should be rebuilt or replaced when you are able.

Ok so far -> filter is delivered until now, what should i do? About water in trans or not enough trans oil i can definitely say NO.

What should i do now?

only Filter change now?

Filter and Trans Range Sensor?

wait until the pressure tools are delivered and begin testing the pressure then?

Car still stands at my garage, i´ve no hurry, have a second car. But i want drive again my jeep...

bye,
samse

Recommend Fluid and Filter change first, then after, driving or pressure tests, your choice.
If pressure tests are good, remember to change fluid and filter again soon.
If there remain problems driving, then there is other problems too. Possibly ruined clutches/plates.

Ok, i´ve read your edited post and your last post.

Will change the filter and oil, then do the pressure test.

Thx so far, will keep you informed in this thread... :ALONE:

bye,
samse

an update after some time:

fluid and filter changed, pressure test made. at the pressure test i´ve te curious thing, that when i do the first test at the L/R test connector in position L, i´ve just about 80psi (115-145psi FSM says). when i shift to position R (also is the sixth test) the pressure goes to 230psi (good pressure). after shifting R back to L (first gear) again, the pressure suddenly is ok, just a little bit too high (160psi).

Still thinking about this couriosity

my first two test drives works better, just still getting these three dtc´s again and again:

DTC´s still comes at about 55mph or 80km/h. Next test will be the clutch test with DRBII but i´m thinking, that a transmission teardown will still be my destination... :x

stay tuned... :dead:

bye,
samse

EDIT: will drive some miles at weekend, to get with the DRBIII more information (oil temp and so on...), and will also try to drive with OD/off

P1684 just means that either your battery went completely flat, or you disconnected it to work on something.

P0734 and P1790

Both of these relate to drivetrain speed checks.
Specific input rpm in any specific gear should result in an output rpm within a given range.
P0734 is telling you that conditions in your vehicle have violated that check. Most likely fault of torque converter OR transmission
P1790 is telling you it faulted immediately after shifting. Still could be either one, but raises the odds a bit on the transmission.

Good Luck

Till the end i didn´t find the reason for the shifting problem between 3rd/4th gear, which still remained.

So i changed the transmission against a remanufactured from rockauto (Transmission Authority) and now i´m still driving again with my KJ....
