I know we have several Ecoboost fanatics out there...but I've finally seen what I have been waiting for...Ford is finally increasing the power on the big SUVs that use the 3.5L Ecoboost engine! It's kind of aggravating that they only offer the higher HP on the more expensive models, but hopefully it will be offered for cheaper ones in the future.

For those interested in some numbers:

2003-2005 6.0L powerstroke: 325 HP 560 ftlbs 13-14 MPG in my eco-chipped Excursion 4X4
2018 Expedition Max/Navigator 375-450 HP 470-510 ftlbs 18-20 MPG

Now if they could just make a decent one for under $50K !!

That combined with the new aluminum body and 10-speed transmission, those things must really move when you put the pedal down. Wonder if they're faster than the new Durango SRT8?

I know the V8 purists will disagree, but that engine belongs in a Mustang.

Heck they should be putting it in everything they can, to get their average fuel economy up.

They have the 4 banger ecoboost that makes 60 some HP less in a vehicle that weighs 2000lbs less, mainly due to being sold in Europe where they pay taxes based on engine size in most places.

The 2017 f150 debuted the 2nd gen 3.5L ecoboost and had 375hp/470tq. The 2017+ raptor has the 450hp/510tq version. There really is not much physical difference between them a tune will put them at the same power level.

I’m more interested in the 2.7 ecoboost now that it has the 10 speed for 2018. It’s good for 24 mpg Highway in the 4x4 config.

No the expedition is still a boat anchor. It weighs close to 6000 lbs still.

A lower optioned supercrew f150 is close 5000 lbs though.

Why would they make an aluminum bodied pickup, but no an aluminum bodied expedition/excursion?

From what I have seen the '17 Raptor's 3.5 is very different then the regular 3.5,basically a de-tuned 3.5 from the GT.

It is aluminum, it’s just not light. The F250/350 is aluminum now too but the reinvested the weight savings into beefier frames and axles so they also are about the same weight as the old ones. it’s possible something like that happened with the expedition(more sound deadening or something?)

As far as I know it’s not the case. There is a guy on f150ecoboost.net that has torn down both motors and is building short blocks for people and he said it’s very minimal. I believe the differences amount to things like slightly different exhaust manifolds and different head gasket or something.

I am continually impressed by how my F150 tows with the ecoboost. I’m towing a full width/height, 5500 lb travel trailer and even here at altitude I can be cruising along at 70 mph in 6th gear like it’s nothing. It does 7% grades at 70 in 4th gear at 3000 rpm. My only mod is a mild 87 octane towing tune. I did just buy an afe intercooler but that’s really more about power consistency than any peak gains.
